Overview
Each year, Eisenhower Fellowships’ Global Program seeks diverse, dynamic doers to join its influential global network of over 1,600 active Fellows. We seek ambitious, disciplined rising leaders with the vision to make the world a better place as well as the ability to create and implement a concrete plan to make that vision a reality post-fellowship. Fellows represent all professional sectors – private, public and nonprofit – and hail from any number of careers, from journalism to the military to higher education to private corporations to the theater and beyond.
Details
What all Fellows share, regardless of their professional background or nationality, is a desire to make meaningful positive change in the world in collaboration with peers across sectors and borders. Successful candidates are eager to leverage the global network of Eisenhower Fellowships and engage, over their lifetime as an Eisenhower Fellow, in constructive projects and initiatives designed to enhance the values of Eisenhower Fellowships: peace, prosperity and justice.
In the spring of 2020, Eisenhower Fellowships (EF) will assemble a diverse group of 20 to 25 leading change agents, aged 32-45, from around the world to participate in its unique six-week program. The goal of this program is to deepen Fellows’ leadership skills, connect innovative Fellows with like-minded colleagues in the EF network and foster sustained collaborations that result in measurable, positive real-world impact.
EF'S GLOBAL PROGRAMS
Annually, approximately 45-50 Global Fellows are selected to travel to the United States for an intensive six-week fellowship program. We bring together innovative leaders from across geographies and sectors, visionaries who tackle big challenges to better the world around them. Though diverse in background and interests, our Fellows are committed to a singular aim: creating a world more peaceful, prosperous, and just. Eisenhower Fellows are mid-career professionals, typically 32 to 45 years old.
In the spring, EF brings around 25 Fellows from 25 different countries for the Global Program. All professional backgrounds and regions of the world are represented in this flagship program of EF, which dates back to 1954. In the fall, EF mixes up its programming by focusing on either a single region – such as Southeast Asia, the Middle East or Africa – or common interest – such as women’s leadership, urbanization, energy or innovation. Another 20 to 25 Fellows are selected to participate in these thematic programs, capitalizing on their shared interests and backgrounds to enhance the impact of the fellowship.
Although part of a fellowship of 25 people, each Fellow travels independently around the United States following an itinerary customized to fulfill their fellowship objectives and project. They meet with experts and thought leaders in relevant fields and organizations who help them identify steps to advance their fellowship project post-fellowship and increase their effectiveness as leaders in the medium and long term.
A three-day Opening Seminar launches the fellowship and lays the groundwork for lifelong bonds as colleagues, friends and Eisenhower Fellows. Fellows have time to learn more about one another and engage in lively conversation about global matters with international journalists, policy experts and others. After a few weeks of independent fellowship travel, Fellows gather for a long weekend to enjoy a much-needed break and engage in a reflective retreat. During Closing Seminar, which concludes the fellowship, Fellows share stories about the meaning of their fellowships and prepare final reports in which they lay out their plans for implementing their fellowship projects once they return home.
Throughout the program, EF sponsors, Trustees and supporters - in addition to EF's network of over 300 USA Eisenhower Fellows, exceptional U.S. leaders located all over the country - also provide Global Fellows with opportunities to engage in substantive dialog and advance their fellowship goals.

Description of Ideal Candidate
Eligibility Criteria and Important Considerations:
- Eligible candidates must have citizenship and/or current residence for at least five years in the country that they are applying to represent on fellowship. If an applicant currently resides in the United States, they are not eligible for our international programs
- If an applicant does not reside in or have citizenship in a country where EF is currently active, they must demonstrate that their work has regional impact and obtain a letter of recommendation from a member of the EF global network in order to be considered. Please see here for a list of countries where the EF Network is currently active.
- Priority is given to applicants within our age range of focus: 32-45 years of age at the time of the program. This is one of many criteria we consider. Candidates who are slightly above or below the target range will still be considered if they excel in the other criteria.
- Strong proficiency in the English language is required.
- Selected Fellows must obtain approval from their workplace to go on leave and make a full-time commitment for the duration of the in-person program at the time of acceptance. Breaks from program are only permitted in the event of a dire personal or family emergency. We tentatively anticipate this program taking place over nearly six weeks from early April 2026 through mid-May 2026.
- Children are not permitted on fellowship under any circumstances. EF does not fund spousal travel.
- We will not consider a candidate who has had any fellowship within the previous two years of applying to EF.
- Fellows cannot use the fellowship to make business deals, solicit funds for their projects or seek any sort of financial support.
- Please note that use of generative AI/ChatGPT in the writing of any essay portion of the EF application is prohibited. All outside sources must be properly cited. An applicant suspected of using generative AI/ChatGPT in their application essays will not advance to the next stage of consideration for the fellowship.
