Overview

AstraZeneca Canada and Plan International Canada are looking for inspiring youth changemakers across the country to join us in our quest to make Canada – and the world – a healthier and more sustainable and equitable place.

Details

We are inviting youth in Canada between the ages of 18 and 30 to apply to be a part of the newly launched Eureka Fellowship for Youth Changemakers in Canada (Eureka Fellowship) and be given the opportunity to attend the One Young World Summit Montréal, 2024 (18 - 21 September) – the world’s largest and most impactful youth leadership event focused on tackling some of the biggest challenges facing humanity.

The Eureka Fellowship will bring together thirteen incredible youth changemakers from across Canada who are actively working to make a positive impact in one of three areas: (1) access to healthcare and health equity, (2) environmental protection and climate action, or (3) championing diversity, equity, and inclusion (including gender equality).

About the Eureka Fellowship for Youth Changemakers in Canada

With a shared commitment to creating a more sustainable, equitable, and healthy planet, AstraZeneca Canada and Plan International Canada have partnered to launch the Eureka Fellowship. This national fellowship aims to identify, spotlight, and amplify the incredible impact of inspiring young changemakers from across the country who are focused on tackling some of Canada’s and/or the planet’s biggest sustainability challenges – from improving access to healthcare in remote, Indigenous, and global communities, to supporting reforestation in response to the recent wildfires across the country, to actively working to ensure LGBTQ+ voices are well-respected, represented, and more.

In its inaugural year, the Eureka Fellowship will provide thirteen (13) inspiring youth Canadian changemakers the opportunity to attend the One Young World Summit Montréal, 2024, taking place from 18 - 21 September. At the Summit, young leaders will participate in learning and development workshops and network with global youth changemakers. The annual One Young World Summit brings together young leaders representing 190+ countries and 250+ organizations to confront the biggest challenges facing humanity. Delegates will attend four life-changing days of networking and knowledge-sharing. Together, participating youth leaders raise the bar for what social impact we can make both individually and as a global community.

The fellowship will identify and connect a diverse team of youth sustainability leaders from across Canada who have demonstrated their commitment to making a positive impact on people, society, or the planet. Potential fellows should have a passion for local and global issues, such as increasing access to healthcare and health equity, supporting environmental protection and climate action, or championing diversity, equity, and inclusion. They should also demonstrate a willingness to engage, collaborate, and share knowledge with other Eureka Fellowship recipients. Selected fellows will receive full funding to participate in the Summit as members of the Eureka Fellowship delegation, have opportunities to participate in exclusive programming in the lead up to, during, and following the Summit, and receive expert mentorship to help amplify and accelerate their sustainability initiatives.

Selection Process

Eureka Fellowship for Youth Changemakers in Canada recipients will be selected by a committee of representatives from AstraZeneca Canada and Plan International Canada.

Selections will be made, and applicants notified by May 2024. Applications are due by 11:59 p.m. EST on 23 April.

One Young World 2024 Montréal

The next One Young World Summit will take place in Montréal, Canada, in 2024. Montréal is a vibrant and multicultural city, known for its rich history, culture, and innovation. It is also home to many global organizations, such as the United Nations, UNESCO, and the International Civil Aviation Organization. Montréal is the perfect place to host the One Young World Summit, as it offers a diverse and inspiring environment for young leaders to connect, learn, and collaborate.

Indigenous Youth Day

One Young World will organise an Indigenous Youth Day before the Summit in Montréal in 2024. This event will bring together young Indigenous and First Nation leaders worldwide to share their experiences, learn from each other, and engage with other One Young World Delegates. The Indigenous Youth Day will reflect the cultural diversity and traditions of the host nation and provide a platform for Indigenous and First Nation youth to showcase their cultures and traditions. One Young World will be extending its Global Consultation Process to feature an additional consultation with Indigenous Youth and the Indigenous Council on which issues they wish to see discussed at the One Young World Summit in Montréal and what the Plenary themes.

Our Global Summit

The One Young World Opening Ceremony is the official kick-off of the Summit, where delegates are welcomed by the host city and the One Young World Counsellors, who are influential leaders from various fields. The Opening Ceremony in 2024 will take place at the iconic Bell Centre, the largest ice hockey arena in the world and the home of the Montréal Canadiens of the National Hockey League. It is located in the heart of downtown Montréal and is known for its state-of-the-art production technology making it an ideal place to showcase the talent and diversity of the One Young World community. The Opening Ceremony will feature a spectacular show with live music, performances, speeches, and a flag parade, where delegates will proudly represent their countries and regions.

The summit will take place at the Palais des Congrès de Montréal. The Palais des Congrès is a carbon-neutral building that implements various initiatives to reduce its environmental footprint, such as responsible sourcing, waste management, and community engagement. The Palais des Congrès is also located in the heart of downtown Montréal, close to many attractions, restaurants, and public transportation options. All the hotels that are part of the One Young World accommodation package are within walking distance from the Palais des congrès, making it highly sustainable and convenient for delegates to travel between venues.

Acknowledgement of traditional lands

We acknowledge that One Young World 2024 will take place within the traditional unceded lands of the Kanien’kehá:ka (Mohawk) peoples, part of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. There is also a strong historic presence of Anishinaabe peoples in what is now known as the Greater Montréal area. Tio’tia:ke, or Montréal, has also long been, and continues to be, a gathering place for many First Peoples from all directions. We honour and thank the traditional custodians of this land and strive to work for the success of future generations.

What is One Young World?

One Young World was founded in 2009 by David Jones and Kate Robertson. We are a UK-based charity that gathers together the brightest young leaders from around the world, empowering them to make lasting connections to create positive change.

We stage an annual Summit where the most valuable young talent from global and national companies, NGOs, universities and other forward-thinking organisations are joined by world leaders, acting as the One Young World Counsellors.

Delegates participate in four transformative days of speeches, panels, networking and workshops. All delegates have the opportunity to apply to give keynote speeches, sharing a platform with world leaders with the world’s media in attendance. As well as listening to keynote speakers, delegates have the opportunity to challenge world leaders, interact and be mentored by influencers. Delegates make lasting connections throughout the Summit, celebrating their participation at social events and the unforgettable Opening and Closing Ceremonies.

After each Summit, the delegates, who are then known as One Young World Ambassadors, work on their own initiatives or lend the power of the One Young World network to those initiatives already in existence. Of those in employment, many returns to their companies and set about creating change from within, energising their corporate environment.
