FALLING WALLS VENTURE TIMELINE
7 November - Falling Walls Pitches
Falling Walls Lab brings together the next generation of outstanding innovators, at Falling Walls Engage inspiring science communicators convene, and at Falling Walls Venture the science start-up community meets.
8 November - Falling Walls Circle – Challenges and Foresight
Is the new format connecting science and society. Researchers, policymakers, business leaders, and society debate the biggest challenges we face and the foresight that scientific breakthroughs can bring.
9 November - Falling Walls Science Breakthroughs of the Year
On the anniversary of the historic fall of the Berlin Wall, the grand finale showcases outstanding research in inspiring presentations. For the 13th time, “the greatest minds on the planet“ (BBC) will present their work.
How does the NOMINATION AND APPLICATION process work?
1. NOMINATIONS.
For nominating institutions: Nominate the selected start-up as the Falling Walls Science Breakthrough of the Year 2024 Science Start-Ups. You will only have to provide basic information; the nominated start-up will send in detailed application material in a second step.
For start-ups: Ask your university or research institution (i.e. VP Innovation, Director Technology Transfer, Head of university accelerator or a professor) or another organisation, like a VC firm, to nominate your start-up as the Falling Walls Science Breakthrough of the Year 2024 Science Start-Ups.
Nominations must be submitted by 15 May 2024 through our online form.
2. APPLICATIONS. To complete your application, we will ask you to:
- fill out the application form,
- send us your pitch deck (PDF) and
- upload a pitch video (video requirements and recommendations here).
You will receive further details on the necessary application materials after your nomination was submitted. Then, you do have about two weeks to submit your application.
3. FINALISTS. The applications are continuously reviewed and evaluated. Should you make it to the next round you will be able to call yourself a Falling Walls Finalist and you will be announced as such on our website.
4. WINNERS. Our selection committee will screen the applications of all Finalists. The 25 most promising start-ups will be invited as Winners to Berlin to pitch their start-up to a distinguished jury and global online audience on 7 November.
5. FALLING WALLS SCIENCE BREAKTHROUGH OF THE YEAR 2024 SCIENCE START-UPS. The jury will select the Falling Walls Science Breakthrough of the Year 2024 Science Start-Ups from all 25 Winners. The selected start-up will pitch again on stage at the Falling Walls Breakthrough Day in front of global leaders on 9 November.

Description of Ideal Candidate
We are looking for innovative science start-ups that have translated breakthrough scientific thinking into promising business models.
Eligibility criteria:
- Falling Walls Venture is open to start-ups that are based on scientific research
- Falling Walls Venture is open to all scientific disciplines (e.g. biotech, data & AI, cleantech, new materials, engineering, healthcare, food & agriculture)
- Each start-up must be endorsed by a nominating institution. This can be a university, a research institution, or another type of organization, like an accelerator or incubator
- The company must be founded (incorporated) by the time you apply and cannot be older than 5 years
- Start-ups who have already participated in the Falling Walls Venture Pitches are not eligible to participate again
- Start-ups should already have a prototype/proof of concept and primary funding

Cost/funding for participants
As a start-up, you get the chance to:
- Get selected as one of the 25 Venture Winners, participate in the Falling Walls Science Summit in Berlin from 7 to 10 November, and have your accommodation and part of your travel costs covered
- Get coached on pitching and present your work to a distinguished jury, global leaders and a selected audience during the Falling Walls Venture Pitches on 7 November
- Become the “Falling Walls Science Breakthrough of the Year” in the “Science Start-Ups” category
- Present your work in front of an audience of global leaders at the Falling Walls Breakthrough Day on 9 November
- Expand your network with investors and business partners and become a part of the Falling Walls Community
- Extend your global reach and be spotlighted across our online platforms
