Overview

The Institute for Housing and Urban Development Studies (IHS) is a centre of urban expertise of Erasmus University Rotterdam. Looking at cities from different perspectives, we educate urban professionals from diverse backgrounds, consult national and local governments from the Global South and engage in cutting-edge urban research. Bringing practical experience from real-life projects back to the classroom, we inspire collaboration and co-creation of urban knowledge. Together with our partners, we work at the forefront of urban development to improve the well-being of people living in cities across the globe.

The successful candidate will be part of the Department of Urban Economics & Governance, supporting us in education, advisory and research.

Internship Tracks & Responsibilities

Internship 1: Closer Cities

Closer Cities aims to bring urban practitioners, researchers, ideas, and practices closer together by carefully studying the mechanisms, hindrances, and stimulating factors of sharing and co-creating urban knowledge on SDGs within and between cities across the globe. It collaborates with researchers of IHS, BOLD cities, Vital Cities and Citizens, Delft University, and Nesselaar Consultancy.

The intern will:

  • Support the digital platform development of CLOSER CITIES.
  • Support programme management.
  • Support ongoing research projects.
  • Develop blogs and other communications on ongoing research.

Internship 2: Urban Economics

The intern will:

  • Join ongoing advisory project: inequality diagnostics of various emerging countries (German Development Cooperation). Tasks include collecting data, preparing tables and visualisations, literature search and review, write-up sections of the diagnostics.
  • Support research projects of Department members. Tasks include collecting and cleaning data, preparing tables and visualisations, literature search and review, write-up sections of the papers.
  • Contribute to educational courses: tasks include literature search, preparation of course manuals, organisational tasks.

Internship 3: Urban Governance Policy and Planning & Inequality Position Paper

The intern will:

  • Execute literature reviews on the themes dealt with urban governance policy and planning.
  • Work closely with and support coordinators and academic assistants on designing exercises and the logistics of group work in the urban governance policy and planning course.
  • Contribute to the position paper on urban inequality & resilience. Tasks include literature search and review, organizing meetings and interviews, and supporting the process.

General Requirements

  • The candidate should be a student at a Dutch or foreign university (with a Residence Permit for the Netherlands) in a graduate/undergraduate (Master/Bachelor) study programme that requires a work placement/ internship at an international organisation like IHS.
  • The candidate must have successfully completed at least two years of an undergraduate degree or be a Master degree student in (urban) economics, public policy, development studies, governance studies, urban management, or other related disciplines.
  • Affinity for topics in urban economics and governance. For the internship position in urban economics: Affinity with quantitative methods.

Specific Skills

  • Able to work in a diverse cultural and professional environment.
  • International experience in a multicultural (work) environment is an asset.
  • Creative and pro-active attitude in teamwork, but also able to work independently.
  • Able to work on several things at the same time and with deadlines.
  • International (work) experience in a multicultural environment is an asset.
  • Strong organisational skills.
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English
  • Excellent computer skills, such as a good use of Microsoft Office applications
  • Strongly motivated.

Terms & Conditions

  • IHS will establish an internship agreement that states the terms and conditions of the internship. This document needs to be signed by IHS, a representative of the intern's university, and the intern. Candidates that cannot provide university approval for the respective agreement cannot be accepted.
  • The candidate must have a Dutch residence permit valid for the total period of the internship or be an EU citizen. Candidates without a permit cannot be accepted. Any other residence permits not issued by Dutch authorities or a permit from another European country is not valid for the Netherlands.
  • IHS and MUG students are ineligible to apply for the intern position.
  • The intern position is available in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, for at least three and a maximum of six months.
  • Full-time internships have a workload of 40 hours per week. Part-time internships (minimum 0.6 FTE) may be possible.
  • We offer a cost compensation of 300 euros gross per month for undergraduate students and 500 euros gross per month for master students (pro-rata for part-time internships).
