Details

About the programme

Experience the vibrant, student friendly city of Leeds and explore the rich history, culture and natural beauty of the area. The summer school combines world-class tuition with academic field trips. Leeds International Summer School also includes social activities and cultural excursions.

What’s included

Tailored academic experience

Tailor your summer school experience to your interests by choosing from a diverse range of academic modules.

You'll study one or two modules and earn up to 20 University of Leeds credits (equivalent to six US credits or 10 ECTS credits) that you may be able to transfer back to your course at your home university.

Field trips with every module

Each module usually includes at least one field trip to support what you’ve learned in the classroom and give you insights into British culture, history and society.

Previous destinations include Castle Howard in York, the Brontë Parsonage in Haworth and the cities of Manchester and Liverpool, as well as trips within the city of Leeds to local businesses and destinations such as Leeds Art Gallery and Kirkgate Market.

Cultural excursions and social events

LISS has a busy social programme to help you make the most of your time in Leeds and the UK. The programme fee includes orientation activities, a farewell social and one full-day excursion per block. Previous excursions have included visits to the historic city of York, the beautiful countryside of the Yorkshire Dales, the coastal town of Whitby, and Harewood House, a traditional English country home.

Our social assistants will provide you with support and knowledge of the local area and will be a friendly face throughout the programme. They’ll live in the accommodation with you during the summer school and organise free or low-cost evening and weekend social activities to help you meet new people and make friends.

Previous social activities have included film nights, karaoke and a traditional British pub quiz.

You’ll also have the option to travel independently on weekends. Our campus is a short walk from Leeds city centre, making it easy to experience everything the city has to offer. Leeds is conveniently located in the centre of the UK and capital cities like London and Edinburgh are only a few hours away by train.

Accommodation

As a summer school student, you’ll usually live in on-campus University accommodation such as Charles Morris Hall (Dobree and Whetton Houses), Lyddon Hall, Ellerslie Global Residence or Henry Price Residences.

You’ll have the privacy of your own room and share bathroom, kitchen and dining facilities with other summer school students. Breakfast and lunch are included from Monday to Friday. The kitchens have cooking facilities, but if you don’t feel like cooking for yourself, there are lots of places to eat on campus and hundreds of cafes and restaurants in the city centre.

Premium sport and wellbeing membership

Premium membership for The Edge, our state-of-the-art indoor sports facility, is included in the LISS programme fee. The Edge has a 250-station fitness suite, a 25m swimming pool, sauna and steam room and more than 70 classes per week.
