Overview
The 8th edition of the Frontiers of Children's Rights Summer School took place online from 1 July to 5 July 2024. It took a close look at contemporary children’s rights issues from a legal perspective, accompanied by reflections from other academic disciplines, legal systems, local perceptions and realities. The next edition is set for Summer 2024.
Details
Leading academic and professional experts in the field of children’s rights, international law and other relevant disciplines offer inspiring and interactive lectures, seminars and excursions in and around Leiden Law School. The classes will be taught in the beautiful premises of the renovated Leiden Observatory. On Friday the participants will visit the International Criminal Court in The Hague. Classes will be taught in The Hague that day. The week will be concluded with a farewell dinner at the beach.

The programme is being developed by Prof. Ton Liefaard, UNICEF Chair in Children’s Rights and Vice-Dean of Leiden Law School (Leiden University), and Prof. Julia Sloth-Nielsen, Professor of Children’s Rights in the Developing World at Leiden University.
Academic content
Frontiers of Children’s Rights provides a comprehensive children’s rights course, which takes a close look at contemporary children’s rights issues from a legal perspective accompanied by reflections from other academic disciplines, legal systems, local perceptions and realities. Themes include: juvenile justice, alternative care, protection and participation of children in (armed) conflict, emerging global issues and children's rights and digital technologies.
Study load
The course includes about 27 hours of workshops, lectures and educational field trips, which require approximately 30 hours of preparation.
Class size
To ensure active participation and exchange with teaching staff and fellow participants, a maximum of 40 participants will be admitted to this course.

The lectures and workshops are combined with a number of educational field trips: the visit to a youth detention centre will provide you with a glimpse into the Dutch juvenile justice system, while the workshops at the Child Rights Home allows you to engage with child rights NGO's and the visit to the International Criminal Court in The Hague will introduce you to the law and practice of international criminal justice. The course also offers plenty of opportunities to network with fellow students and practitioners from all over the world. Last, but not least, Leiden is a charming place to stay!

Target audience
This summer school is aimed at law students (who have completed at least three years of their degree), graduates and professionals with a background in law. Applicants with a background in other relevant disciplines that are relevant to the theme of the summer school will be considered as well.

Cost/funding for participants
Course fees
The tuition fee for the 2024 session is €950. We offer a special early bird fee of €800 to the participants who register before 1 May 2024. Leiden University students and students from partner universities also pay a reduced fee of €800. Unfortunately, there are no scholarships available for this course.
What's included?
The fee includes access to the digital course materials, a certificate of participation, educational field trips, lunches and refreshments on course days, welcome drinks, a canal boat tour through the historic town of Leiden, and a farewell dinner at the beach.
