Details

Established in 1989, LSE Summer School is now the largest of its kind in the whole of Europe. The programme offers courses from a diverse range of disciplines including business and management, accounting, finance, law, economics, international relations, and more. From Economic Policy to Cyberlaw, the courses are wide-ranging and aim to suit all interests.

Created by LSE faculty and taught to a degree standard by LSE lecturers, the programmes are designed to give you the same learning experience as full-time students. You can study for three, six or nine weeks, in one of the most well-renowned institutions in the world, in one of the greatest cities in the world.

Courses taught during the Summer School are based on regular LSE undergraduate courses, and taught to the same standards by leading LSE faculty. Lecturers are experts in their chosen fields and committed to teaching with academic rigour and contemporary relevance. Our faculty are actively involved in academic research and many act as advisers and consultants to companies and Government bodies.

Study in one of the world's most exciting cities

London is one of the most exciting and culturally-diverse cities in the world. Being a part of LSE Summer School will give you the opportunity to study and live centrally in one of the leading global cities in the world.

While the main focus of your time at LSE will be your studies, you will also have the chance to relax with your fellow students outside of class. An organised social programme will give you a chance to see some of the sights of London. Some of the events held in 2015 included trips to the theatre, walking tours all around London, day-trips to Cambridge and Oxford, and the ever-popular Thames river cruises.

Mix with students from all over the world

At LSE you will be given the chance to interact with students from a diverse range of backgrounds and cultures, both in and out of class. You will be exposed to a variety of insights and opinions, and form friendships and networks that span the globe. In 2015 we welcomed students from the top universities around the world, including Harvard, Yale, Bocconi, Copenhagen Business School, EDHEC and many more.

While the majority of our students are undergraduate students, we also welcome a large number of postgraduate students and professionals each year. In 2015, over 500 professionals from a variety of fields attended the Summer School. Each year we welcome groups from organisations such as the Bank of England, the European Commission, Dutch Ministry of Finance, Bank of Italy and the United Nations.

Gain credit towards your degree

Institutions all over the world grant credit for Summer School courses. While ultimately it is up to your home institution as to how much credit is awarded, generally our courses are awarded 3 credits in the US system and 7.5 ECTS in the European system. For details, speak to your Study Abroad advisor.

Courses

We offer an exciting range of courses across the wide spectrum of LSE’s world-class teaching. These courses are examined to LSE standards and can often be taken for credit towards degrees at other institutions.

Summer School courses are drawn from across the university, and are divided into the following subject areas:

Courses by subject:

  • Accounting
  • Business and Management
  • Economics
  • English Language
  • Finance
  • International Relations
  • Law
  • Research Methods

Course Levels:

  • 100 level courses (e.g. AC101, EC101) are equivalent to first year university courses. They have no specific prerequisites in their own subject but may require some mathematics or other related subjects.
  • 200 level courses (e.g. FM250, LL204) are equivalent to second year university courses. They have prerequisites in the form of university level introductory courses in the same, or a closely related, subject.
  • 300 level courses (e.g. EC351, ME314) are advanced and equivalent to either final year undergraduate or first year graduate courses. They have prerequisites of university level intermediate courses.

Please note that it is only possible to take one course per session.

We work on a first-come, first-served basis, which means that we have no fixed deadlines and you can apply for any course up until the point it is filled. We receive applications on a daily basis, therefore in order to avoid disappointment we suggest that students apply as early as possible.

Please also note that accommodation spaces are limited and may fill up before this date so you are advised to apply as soon as possible if you wish to stay in LSE Halls.
