Overview

One full scholarship is available for applicants who are applying to the full-time DPhil in Law.

Details

The scholarships have been made possible by the generous contribution of Peter Farthing (1949-2012), who read Law at Pembroke College.

The scholarship covers course fees and a grant for living costs. Awards are made for the full duration of your fee liability for the agreed course.

The scholarship is only tenable at Pembroke College. All eligible applicants will be considered for this scholarship, regardless of which college (if any) you state as your preference on the graduate application form. However, successful applicants will be transferred to Pembroke College in order to take up the scholarship.

In awarding the Oxford-Farthing Graduate Scholarship, preference will be given to those who wish to work with the Professor of Public Law and Criminal Law, Rebecca Williams. It is likely that the scholar will also have an opportunity to teach at the College level.

Selection is expected to take place in June 2026.

Cost/funding for participants

The scholarship covers course fees, college fees and a grant for living costs of at least £14,553.  Awards are made for the full duration of your fee liability for the agreed course. The scholarship is jointly funded by the University and Peter Farthing (1949-2012), who read Law at Pembroke College and went on to a successful career at a renowned City firm where he became a Partner specialising in insurance and shipping. Erudite, generous and hugely civilised, he was also a lover of country life, retiring to live on his Welsh hill farm. Peter was especially devoted to Pembroke as an alumnus, being elected as an Advisory Fellow and full member of its Governing Body in 2000, only retiring in 2010. He was always fully engaged with the academic agenda and, on his untimely death in 2012, the College decided that a part of his exceptionally generous legacy to Pembroke should be allocated to Graduate Scholarships in Law in his name.
