Overview

Designed at the intersection of public international law and human rights law, this masters programme offers an in-depth look at the fundamental legal issues of the two specialisations as well as their interaction.

Details

Leveraging the extensive human rights law expertise of RGSL faculty, the master’s programme prepares students to work with international law and human rights spheres both at national and international levels.

The programme explores legal issues surrounding sovereignty, fundamental rights, state responsibility, criminality. In addition the programme focuses on international institutions, courts and arbitral bodies involved in the creation of global rules in the area of human rights. 

Programme structure

The one year masters programme consists of 60 ECTS of theoretical study within each course track of which 30 ECTS are devoted to a thesis. Following successful completion, students are awarded a Masters degree (LL.M) in Public International Law and Human Rights.

Courses

Students have to complete six mandatory courses and two optional courses chosen from other masters prorgamme streams and defend their master thesis at the end of the programme.

In addition to the selected mandatory courses, all students, regardless of the programme, have to complete a law foundation course as well as a course in legal research.

Admission criteria for Masters programmes

  • All masters programmes are available to students who have completed a bachelor, masters or equivalent degree in law or a related field (on the condition that basic knowledge of law and corresponding work experience can be demonstrated).
  • For students with a three-year bachelor degree, options are limited to the two-year masters programmes.
  • English language proficiency: IELTS 6+, TOEFL IBT 80+ or TOEFL paper based test 550+.

Cost/funding for participants

RGSL tuition fee waivers

In academic year 2022/2023 RGSL offers 100% tuition fee waiver for the best applicant for "Public International Law and Human Rights" masters programme.

Latvian state scholarships for foreign students

In accordance with bilateral agreements on co-operation in education and science signed between Latvian government and several countries, Latvia offers scholarships to foreign students, researchers and teaching staff for studies, research and summer schools in Latvian higher education institutions. The scholarships are administered by the State Education Development Agency (Valsts izglītības attīstības aģentūra – VIAA).

The amount of scholarship for students of bachelor and masters programmes last year was 500 EUR per month. 

Applicants from countries requiring a visa for Latvia are required to pay a processing fee of EUR 100. Further instructions will be provided during application. Please note that this fee is non-refundable.
