Details

The Royal Society of Biology runs a number of competitions for school students as well as a photography competition for biology enthusiasts.

An annual biology photography competition which invites amateurs to submit photographs on a particular theme. Each year, the competition's judges look for an original interpretation of this theme. Participants can enter in one of two categories: Photographer of the Year (18 and over) with a £1000 top prize, or Young Photographer of the Year (under 18) with a £500 top prize.

Competition theme for 2024

The theme of the 2024 Royal Society of Biology Photography Competition is Transforming Life.

The 2024 competition is now open to entries between 14th March and 20th June 2024. Teachers and photography club leaders can now download a poster to advertise this year’s competition.

We invite submissions that explore the profound changes occurring across our planet, highlighting the resilience and adaptability of life in response to environmental changes, human intervention, and scientific innovation. Including but not limited to:

  • Ecosystem dynamics and biodiversity: explore the transformations across diverse natural or managed ecosystems, from the microscopic to the macroscopic, or landscape scale views
  • From single cells, or small multicellular life all the way up to mega fauna and flora; from life in one place to mass migrations, or wildlife living in unexpected places such as towns and cities.
  • Humans transforming life: reflect on humanity’s reciprocal relationship with the natural world, including our creation of new habitat areas on land or in the oceans
  • Scientific innovation in the biosciences including climate change mitigation measures, and examples of the beneficial and life-changing impact of bioscientists’ work and innovation
