University of Edinburgh Summer School
The innovative and inspiring courses at the University of Edinburgh's Summer School have been designed to give you the chance to study unique and interesting subjects and benefit from the state-of-the-art facilities the University has to offer.
Our immersive courses provide at least 18 hours of supported academic teaching time per week to make the most of your international experience. Your Summer School will include a full induction, a farewell event and a social programme.
Summer School Courses 2023
Our credit and non-credit Summer School courses aim to develop your skills and knowledge, broaden your international experience, and capitalise on our city's inimitable opportunities.
We welcome applications from undergraduate students, postgraduate students, and professionals. Please note that all of our courses have a minimum age requirement of 18, except our Pre-University courses. Pre-University courses are suitable for students aged 16-18, who are in their last years of high school and wish to gain experience in a university-type learning environment.

Social programme
With a beautiful backdrop of city, countryside and ocean, you can enjoy an enriching social and cultural adventure to complement your academic course.
The Social Programme includes handpicked cultural activities, you can explore the history, traditions, and beauty of Scotland, while meeting new friends from across the world.
The Summer School offers a wealth of included activities for you to join during your time at the University of Edinburgh.
Previous Social Programme activities:
- Experience a true taste of Scottish culture and learn how to dance like a local at our ceilidh (pronounced ‘kay-lee’), a traditional Scottish party.
- See the sights of beautiful Edinburgh with an unmissable sightseeing city bus tour.
- Take a trip out into the beautiful Scottish landscape and tour a real-life whisky distillery (not included on the Pre-University course).
- Stick out your pinky as you lift your teacup at a traditional afternoon tea. Tea and scones, anyone?
- Learn about Edinburgh's spooky and mystical past during a ghost tour of the city. Boo!
Pre-University Course
As a student on our Pre-University course, you will receive a bespoke social programme. As well as similar activities to those listed above, your course fee may also include the following:
- Take a trip to Edinburgh Castle and discover the history of this royal residence upon Castle Rock located in the middle of the city.
- Challenge your new classmates and work as team to solve the clues of the Escape Room challenge.
- Come along to Camera Obsura - a world of illusions where seeing is not believing.
- A full-day guided trip (Saturday or Sunday) into the Scottish landscape. Explore the beautiful scenery of the lochs and highlands.
The activities listed above are subject to change and serve as an example of the type of activities that will be available.
Before applying
- Please have your payment method ready as you will be asked to make the £750 deposit payment at the end of your application.
- All applicants should read the course descriptions and ensure they meet the eligibility requirements. Please check the course description for the application deadline, as the date will vary for each course.
- Applicants whose first language is not English, are expected to have an English language ability equivalent to IELTS 6.5 with a minimum of 5.5 in each component.
- Places are allocated on a first come first served basis, so we encourage you to apply as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

Description of Ideal Candidate
The Scholarships are competitive and awarded both on the basis of financial support deemed necessary and academic merit. A minimum of 3.3 GPA or equivalent is required and evidence of this must be provided along with your application.
In order to apply, you should be a full-time university or college student who can demonstrate that you meet the academic and language requirements of your preferred course.
