Overview

The training “Taking a Stand for Democracy!” offers youth workers practical tools to respond to far-right and anti-democratic views, reflect on their own boundaries, and handle challenging situations through input, casework, and peer exchange.

Details

Intercultural youth exchanges thrive on openness, diversity, and meaningful encounters across borders. They are vibrant spaces where democratic thinking, critical reflection, and social participation come to life. But these spaces are not free from societal tensions. The 2025 federal election in Germany made it clear: extreme political views are no longer fringe – even among young people.

In a world that feels increasingly polarized, where far-right rhetoric, populist slogans, and conspiracy theories are gaining ground, especially among youth, facilitators and educators are more than ever called upon to take a clear and confident stand for democracy. But how can we respond effectively when participants make discriminatory remarks? Where do we draw the line between personal opinion and hate-driven ideology? And how can we preserve open dialogue while standing firmly against intolerance?

This is where the training weekend “Taking a Stand for Democracy!” steps in. Tailored for professionals in international youth work, the seminar equips participants with the tools and confidence to address far-right narratives, anti-democratic attitudes, and conspiracy myths – all while fostering respectful communication. Participants will:

  • Reflect on their personal stance between openness and setting boundaries
  • Learn to recognize and assess problematic statements
  • Develop practical strategies for responding to difficult situations with clarity and professionalism
  • Share and reflect on real-life experiences dealing with anti-democratic behavior in educational settings

With interactive methods, expert input, and peer exchange, the seminar creates a supportive space to grow into your role as a strong and visible advocate for democratic values – both in theory and in practice.
