Stay Safe in Israel
Israel is a safe country and is a go-to for most travelers. Crime rate is only at a moderate rate and does not pose a significant threat to tourists. However, you would want to make sure that you bring with you some safety tips before you travel to this country.
Below are a few reminders on how you can stay safe during your travel to Israel:
- Avoid traveling to the West Bank of Israel as it is a well-known place for terrorism attacks and violent civil unrest.
- Be vigilant most especially when traveling to tourist spots in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, as it is known to have several petty crimes of theft in these locations.
- Do not go out alone at night and postpone travels to the Old City and at the Promenade after dark. Crimes were recorded to increase in these places at night.
- Be aware of ATM skimmers and fraud as it is becoming common. Before using an ATM, make sure that the card slot is intact and not movable. Be mindful of anything that is on the ATM such as paper, empty boxes, or brochures. Throw these items away because these things may hide equipment that are being used for skimming.
- Always watch your luggage and do not leave it unattended or unattached to you. The securities in Israel can be very strict and they would mind unattended luggages. Unattended luggages may pose a threat to the security so better keep it with you.
- When going to the beach, take note of warning signages for spots that are not safe for swimming. From July to August, the beaches in the country become a home to dangerous jellyfish that may sting swimmers. Listen to coastguards and always be mindful of public notices around the beach area.
- Avoid exchanging money with individuals on the streets or transacting with anyone who asks that you change money with them. Only transact with money changer establishments inside the mall or the airport.
- When riding a taxi, always ask for the meter to be turned on the moment you enter the cab. Some taxi drivers may take advantage of tourists and set their own prices as a consequence of not being able to turn on the meter.
- Note that it is normal to see many armed police officers in public, they are only on leave from their bases. Do not be intimidated by them for it is normal. It is also normal for them to check your bag and luggages when entering establishments or secured places.
