2026 AFS BP Global STEM Academies

The AFS Global STEM Academies combine digital and in-person learning, gathering youth from 16 countries worldwide, in which scholars enrich their sustainability knowledge and STEM skills through interactive, hands-on curriculum, while developing critical global competencies, including problem-solving, analytical skills, intercultural understanding, and social innovation. 

The Academies begin with a 12-week virtual e-learning curriculum (from home), engaging in global competence skills, social impact, and sustainability-focused workshops, with content co-developed by AFS and the University of Pennsylvania Center for Social Impact Strategy. The virtual portion of the program culminates with student-led social impact projects and presentations that offer potential solutions to real-world challenges, with an emphasis on sustainability and the UN Sustainable Development Goals, including the topics of climate change and the energy transition. 

After completing the virtual curriculum, Academy scholars travel on a 4-week immersive experience to one of the Academy destinations: Brazil, China, Egypt or India. Academy programming focuses on critical STEM skills and intercultural understanding for global sustainability, as well as local cultural immersion. Scholars participate in community service and have the opportunity to visit local innovative, sustainability focused operations to see first-hand how companies and organizations are using STEM skills in practice to address industry and societal challenges, particularly around sustainability.

Program scholars earn the Advanced Certificate on Global Competence for Social Impact, awarded by AFS and the University of Pennsylvania Center for Social Impact Strategy. bp, a global energy company, provides funding that supports these scholarships.

Where will you go?All Academy scholars start with a 12-week interactive online curriculum (from home), engaging in content on global competence skills, social impact, and sustainability. The virtual portion of the program culminates with student-led social impact projects and presentations that offer potential solutions to real-world challenges, with an emphasis on climate change and the energy transition. After completion of the online curriculum, scholars then travel on a 4-week study abroad experience in one of the following destinations. Please note that travel eligibility and exact program dates are subject to change based on international travel restrictions and/or visa requirements:

Brazil: July 4 – august 1, 2026

Discover innovations in renewable energy: starting in sunny Natal, on Brazil’s northeast coast, and ending with a visit to Rio de Janeiro. Learn about biofuels and alternative energies, while connecting with STEM professionals to see sustainable solutions in action. Engage with researchers at some of Brazil’s premier institutions, including the UFRN, IFRN, International Institute of Physics, and the Brain Institute. Immerse yourself in Brazil’s vibrant culture through Indigenous knowledge, Portuguese language classes, community service, and a special homestay weekend with local families, making this Academy an unforgettable experience.

China: July 8 – August 5, 2026

Embark on a multi-site learning journey through Beijing, Shanghai, and Ningbo and delve into mobility, innovation, and sustainable energy while engaging deeply with Chinese culture. Engage with local STEM leaders and Chinese peers for an immersive and educational exchange, and sharpen practical skills and spark creativity with hands-on activities such as flight simulation and 3D printing. Experience unique visits and short stays with local AFS host families for an authentic glimpse into everyday life in China, fostering deeper cultural understanding. Meanwhile, visit some of China’s world-renowned universities and historical sites for a well-rounded educational experience.

Egypt: July 29 – August 28, 2026

Dive into a one-of-a-kind experience in STREAM (Science, Technology, Robotics, Engineering, Art, and Math), in the grand city of Cairo: the “cradle of civilization” where ancient innovation meets modern creativity. Explore green energy solutions, robotics, and sustainable technologies through hands-on fieldwork and interactive workshops. Experience everyday life in a welcoming Egyptian host family, and immerse yourself in Egypt’s rich culture through fun activities in art, dance, and Arabic language. Enrich your journey with unforgettable field trips, including the Grand Egyptian Museum, where ancient history and future innovation intersect.

India: July 19 – August 18, 2026

Innovation meets vibrant culture in India!
