Overview

Keio University was founded by Yukichi FUKUZAWA in 1858 as the first modern institution of higher education in Japan. To commemorate the university's 150th anniversary in 2008, Keio has launched the "Design the Future" Award for International Students. This scholarship, aimed at highly talented international students with outstanding academic records, is possibly the most generous available from a Japanese university. International students with the drive to become global leaders in academia, business, and public services are strongly encouraged to take advantage of this exceptional opportunity.

The Selection Process

Each graduate school performs a primary screening of applicants and recommends candidates to the Design the Future Fund Steering Committee (hereafter “Steering Committee”). The Steering Committee then conducts a review of documents and holds interviews for the final selection. Interviews will be scheduled on Saturday, December 8, 2019 (Mita Campus, Tokyo). Detailed information about interviews will be sent to each applicant nominated for the award.

Interview

Applicants have a choice of being interviewed in either Japanese or English. If an applicant resides outside Japan, an online interview via Skype, Polycom, etc. is also possible. It is the responsibility of the applicant to prepare a webcam and microphone for the interview. A connection test will be conducted prior to the formal interview.

Dean's message

Amidst increasingly globalization, Keio University is focusing on advancing international collaboration. At Keio, the International Center deals with various affairs related to this.

In recent years, Keio has concentrated on the quantifiable aspects of international collaboration, for example, it has been striving to increase the number of academic linkage and collaboration agreements and the number of students participating in exchange programs. That is not to say that quality has been forgotten. Now is the time to focus on qualitative aspects, ensuring that there is high quality in our international collaborations.

What exactly is high quality international collaboration? One could say that high quality collaboration in the case of agreements on academic linkage and collaboration provides sustained, meaningful interaction for both institutions in the exchange of students or faculty members. However, it is necessary to develop and maintain an environment conducive to building such relationships. The International Center at Keio University strives towards this goal in its day-to-day activities.
