Overview

The American Australian Association (AAA) established its Graduate Education Fund in 2002 to provide much needed financial support and assistance to American and Australian individuals to undertake innovative and transformational Masters, Ph.D. or Postdoctoral study and research in each other’s countries respectively. With more than 300 scholars and alumni and US $10.5 million invested to date, the AAA is committed to helping advance graduate education, in order to enable our countries most valuable resource – human capital – to unlock creative new solutions to global challenges and improve the quality of life for all citizens.

Details

The American Australian Association awards Scholarships at the Graduate (Masters, Ph.D. and Postdoctoral) level of up to US $40,000 each year. Scholarships are available to Americans who will benefit from doing advanced research or study in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, Sustainability, Medicine and Health Care Funding/Economics in Australia.  Scholars are expected to be Ambassadors for their country and should intend to contribute to American intellectual capital, as well as the country’s overall social and economic well-being upon their return.

Scholarship Categories

Specialty Field Scholarships

The Graduate Education Fund supports American and Australian Graduate-level students and researchers in various disciplines, to study in each other’s country, through multiple scholarship opportunities.

  • The AAA Graduate Education Scholarships support American and Australian individuals undertaking or planning to undertake full-time Graduate level study (Masters, Ph.D. or Postdoctoral Research) at an accredited institution in the country of the other, for a minimum of one year. The scholarships outlined below will provide support of up to US $40,000 to those in the specialty fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, Health, Medicine and Sustainability. Scholarship funds may be used toward travel, living, tuition and other associated educational costs.
  • The AAA-Sustainable Health Care Funding (SHCF) Scholarship will fund one American or one Australian Graduate (Postdoctoral, Ph.D. or Masters) student or researcher to undertake comparative research in the field of health care policy and management. Applicants with specializations, including but not limited to financing and delivery of health care; the organization and management of health care delivery systems; the politics of health care policy reform; the impact of health care policy reform on the delivery of health care; or health care economics are invited to apply.  Research focus should include comparisons and lessons learnt from existing Australian and American health care systems. The inclusion of comparisons with New Zealand, Canada or Asian countries is also welcome.
  • Wildfire Research Scholarship
    Natural wildfires are increasing in their severity and frequency and can have widespread and devastating impact on people, communities, infrastructure and natural resources.  In light of recent wildfires in both Australia and the United States, the American Australian Association has created a new Wildfire Research Scholarship, offering support of up to US $40,000 for one Australian and one American candidate to undertake Graduate (Postdoctoral, Ph.D. or Masters) level research or study. 

Indigenous Scholarships

The Graduate Education Indigenous Scholarships support Native American, Alaskan Native, Native Hawaiian, Indigenous Australian and Torres Strait Islander individuals, to undertake full-time Graduate level study (Masters, Ph.D. or Postdoctoral Research) in each other’s countries respectively. These scholarships will provide support of up to US $40,000 to use toward travel, living, tuition and other associated educational costs.

The following scholarships are available each year:

  • AAA – Lisa Fox Indigenous Education Scholarship (Both Directions):Will support one Indigenous Australian or Torres Strait Islander and one Native American, Alaskan Native or Native Hawaiian undertaking or planning to undertake full-time Graduate level study (Masters, Ph.D. or Postdoctoral Research) in any disciplinary field, at an accredited educational institution in the country of the other.

To be eligible for the USA - Australia Graduate Scholarships you must be:

  • A US citizen or permanent resident (dual Australian citizens/permanent residents are not eligible);
  • Undertaking or about to undertake research or study at graduate level or above in Australia;
  • Accepted or affiliated into an Australian University or accredited institution (SHCF Scholarship applicants may be studying with a US accredited institution in Australia); and
  • Plan to undertake a minimum of one-year full time research or study.
