Fulbright Postgraduate Scholarships allow postgraduate students undertaking their Australian PhD to conduct research in the U.S. OR supports postgraduate students not currently enrolled in a degree program to undertake a U.S. postgraduate program such as a Master’s.
Details
A Fulbright award is more than a scholarship – it is, in the words of Senator Fulbright, a means of fostering “leadership, learning, and empathy between cultures… It is a modest program with an immodest aim – the achievement in international affairs of a regime more civilised, rational and humane than the empty system of power of the past.”
Fulbright Qualities
Australian Fulbright Scholarship recipients are interviewed and selected by panels of experts from academia, government, professional organisations and the U.S. Embassy. The panels are looking for the following attributes:
High academic and professional merit
Fulbrighters have a record of high achievement in their chosen field, showcased through academic records, professional standing and recognition, as well as a through publications, exhibitions, performances, public lectures, or presentations.
We fund:
Postgraduate students seeking to:
- undertake a full U.S. Master’s degree (funding for up to 1 academic year)
- conduct research towards an Australian PhD program (4-10 months)
Funding is available for up to 1 academic year and includes partial tuition or visiting researcher fees.
Application deadline
Applications must be submitted by 11:59pm AEST on 6 July. Under no circumstances can late applications be accepted. Please note that even though you may still be able to access the system to upload documents, these will not be accepted after the closing date.

- Students who wish to complete a U.S. Master’s degree*
- Current PhD students who seek to conduct a period of research in the U.S. as a Visiting Student Researcher
- Students who wish to complete a full U.S. PhD program (Fulbright Future award only)*
* Placement Services is available for degree program applicants. Placement at an institution is not required at the time of application.

Award benefits:
Benefits vary per award; please see individual awards listed below for details. Awards generally include:
- Monthly stipend based on the cost of living in the city of the host institution
- Partial tuition allowance for one academic year or Full tuition allowance (Fulbright Future award only)
- Round-trip, economy class airfare directly to and from the scholar’s home city and the city of the host institution
- Establishment allowance
- Dependent allowance- if applicable
- Assistance with identifying U.S. host institutions via Placement Services (Coursework applicants only)
- Health & Accident Insurance (ASPE) – valued at up to USD$100,000 (for the scholar only)
- Access to established professional networks – alumni and other international collaborative groups
- Orientation and enrichment opportunities – in Australia and the U.S.
- Extensive support – from the Commission as well as U.S. organisations
- Media and publicity support
