Overview

The Bank of England is the central bank of the United Kingdom. Sometimes known as the “Old Lady” of Threadneedle Street, the Bank was founded in 1694 with a founding charter that stated its purpose was to “promote the public good and benefit of our people”. We’ve designed this programme to help talented people gain valuable work experience at the heart of the UK’s financial system.

Details

First of all, we’ll introduce you to the different types of work we do. Then, you’ll work in a team, getting involved in our policy, research and operational work. You’ll also attend regular training and events with your fellow Industrial Placement colleagues.

If your performance is outstanding, we may offer you a place on our Graduate Programme or Postgraduate Internship.

Operations

This is our generalist scheme. It is open to students from any degree discipline. 

You could be working in one of the following areas:

  • Central Banking and Operations Division
  • Markets
  • Financial Market Infrastructure
  • Prudential Policy
  • Supervisory Risk Specialist
  • Authorisations  

Data

If you’re interested in data, this is for you. Our data scientists engage with audiences and demonstrate insights that make us more agile, innovative and effective. 

Applicants are usually studying a degree that involves numeracy skills. If you apply for this role, we’ll ask you to do an online Excel test as part of the recruitment process. 

The type of work you would do could involve: 

  • data and statistics
  • finance

Economics

Applicants for this role are usually studying an economics, finance or other numerical degree. To apply, you’ll need to complete an online Excel test as part of the recruitment process.

You could be working in one of the following areas:

  • Monetary Analysis
  • Centre for Central Banking Studies (CCBS)
  • Markets
  • International
  • FSSR
  • Prudential Policy 
  • Independent Evaluation Office

Technology

Get hands-on experience working with our technical experts and get involved in our projects. 

You would work in our Technology division and your work could involve:

  • providing technology support to colleagues across our organisation
  • understanding their needs and suggesting technological solutions
  • developing and presenting reports on change projects

You don’t need a degree in Computer Science to apply. 

Supervision

This is open to students from any degree discipline. 

This role involves supervising financial institutions such as insurance companies, banks and building societies. 

The type of work you would do could involve: 

  • Resolution
  • Financial Market Infrastructure
  • Supervisory Risk Specialist
  • PRA Risk and Operations
  • Authorisations
  • UK Deposit Takers

Description of Ideal Candidate

Entry requirements

  • Studying any undergraduate degree that allows you to do a placement year
  • On target for a class 2.1 degree
  • 120 UCAS points from three A-Levels or equivalent (excluding General Studies) using the 2017 UCAS Tariff System. This is equivalent to 300 UCAS points using the pre-2017 UCAS Tariff System
  • You don’t already have a degree
