The Black Sea Trade and Development Bank (BSTDB) is an international financial institution established by 11 countries in the Black Sea region. Tentative starting date(s): June-July 2024 (6 months)

The intern will assist with:

  • Know Your Customer integrity checks, input to legal documents, market-abuse prevention, protection of personal data, Code of Conduct guidance, internet research, etc.;
  • compilation of data for the Code of Conduct and various databases;
  • preliminary processing of BSTDB rules to be amended, as well as the preliminary drafting of new rules;
  • any other task as assigned.

The purpose of the Bank is to accelerate development and promote co-operation among its shareholder countries. BSTDB supports regional trade and investment, providing financing for commercial transactions and projects in order to help Member States to establish stronger economic linkages.

As defined in the Agreement Establishing the Black Sea Trade & Development Bank, the mission of the Bank is to effectively contribute to the transition process of the Member States towards the economic prosperity of the people of the region. This translates into a dual mandate for the Bank to (i) promote regional cooperation among and (ii) economic development in Member States principally by financing operations in the private and public sectors.

BSTDB’s vision is to be recognized globally, and by its shareholders in particular, as a prominent development finance institution for the Black Sea Region providing well-focused development assistance and solutions.

Living in Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki is Greece’s second largest city with a population of about one million inhabitants. It is located in the northern part of Greece, in the region of Macedonia, 550 Km. north of Athens. Thessaloniki is also the second major economic, industrial, commercial and political center of Greece and a major transportation hub of southeastern Europe. Its commercial port is of great importance for Greece and its southeast European hinterland.

A relaxed lifestyle and a great variety of delicious food can be experienced in the restaurants and ouzeries, being among the best in Greece. At the welcoming Cafés, one can not only enjoy local specialties but also adore the view of Mount Olympus. Thessaloniki is home to a number of festivals and events, including the Thessaloniki International Trade Fair. The Thessaloniki International Film Festival has been established as one of the most important film festivals in Southeastern Europe. The “Demitria” festival has focused on a wide range of events including music, theater, dance and art exhibitions. The “International Festival of Photography” takes place every year and exhibitions for the event are sited at various places such as museums, heritage landmarks and galleries.

Ancient ruins are to be found in the city, Roman and Byzantine sites, several museums and of course the ruins of Vergina, at car distance from Thessaloniki, which include the tomb of Phillip, father of Alexander the Great, attract the interest of thousands of visitors every year. For the sun-lovers, the best beaches and one of the most beautiful natures of Greece are to be found in Chalkidiki and other nearby areas. Two of Greece’s largest and one International University, as well as a U.S-affiliated private College established in the city attract students from throughout Greece and the southern Balkans. Also, many countries have established representation through consulates, cultural centres or honorary consuls in Thessaloniki.

Applicants should:

  • be students/have a degree in Law or Finance or Economics, preferably at master–level;
  • have an excellent command of the English language;
  • have good MS Office and Internet navigation skills.

Eligibility criteria

Internship at the Bank is open to candidates who, on the date of commencement of the internship:

  • are enrolled in an undergraduate (i.e. leading to a bachelor’s degree, generally following secondary education) or graduate (i.e. leading to a master’s or a doctoral degree, generally following a bachelor’s degree) studies in a university or equivalent (this must be certified by an official confirmation of enrolment from the university or equivalent); or have obtained a full degree for undergraduate or graduate studies (as described above in this paragraph) within the 24 months immediately preceding the date of commencement of the internship;
  • are minimum 18 years and maximum 30 years old;  
  • have excellent command of spoken and written English;
  • have not previously benefited from an internship at the Bank or have worked at the Bank.

Candidates who fail to meet the above minimum eligibility criteria shall not qualify for selection.

Cost/funding for participants

What we offer

The duration of an internship shall be from 1 to 6 months, with a minimum of 30 hours per week. Interns shall receive a monthly internship maintenance grant for each month of completed internship as follows:

  • interns, who rent accommodation in Thessaloniki for the purpose of the internship, shall receive Euros 700 (proof of rent is required); 
  • interns, who do not rent accommodation in Thessaloniki for the purpose of their internship, shall receive Euros 400.

Interns shall be reimbursed for travel expenses incurred at the beginning and at the end of the internship up to the total cost of one round trip economy class airfare between the place of university or equivalent studies and Thessaloniki, unless they are entitled to claim such travel expenses from any other source.

Interns whose place of university or equivalent studies is less than 65 km from Thessaloniki are not entitled to reimbursement of travel expenses. The Bank does not have any obligation to secure the interns’ accommodation in Greece, or to organize their travel arrangements.
