Overview

The European Union Agency for Railways (ERA) has been established in 2004 to devise the technical and legal framework for creating a Single European Railway Area (SERA) as mandated under European Union law. ERA’s core activities are creating a harmonised approach to safety, removing technical barriers, advancing the single European Train Control and Communication System (ERTMS), and promoting simplified access for customers for the European rail sector. With the entry-into-force of the technical pillar of the 4th Railway Package, the mandate of the Agency has been extended. As of June 2019, ERA will be a European authority responsible for issuing vehicle authorisations and safety certificates in the European Union, as well as pre-authorising ERTMS trackside equipment.

Details

The aims of the traineeship at ERA are:

  • To provide trainees an understanding of the objectives and activities of ERA.
  • To enable trainees to acquire practical experience and knowledge of the day-to-day work of ERA in the different fields of activity of the Agency.
  • To promote European integration within the spirit of new governance and through active participation to create awareness of true European citizenship.
  • To enable trainees to put into practice knowledge acquired during their studies, or professional careers.

Through this traineeship scheme ERA can benefit from the input from young graduates, who bring a fresh point of view and up-to-date academic knowledge.

Every year ERA Management Team shall decide on the number and type of traineeship placements to offer, depending on the level of funds available and on the capacity of each Unit to accommodate trainees.

Student traineeships:

  • Student traineeship is designed to allow students, having an obligation due to their curricula, to undergo a period of training. This period cannot exceed a total duration of two months. No grant is paid and no reimbursement is made for this type of traineeship.
  • Applications can be submitted at any time.

How to apply?

To apply, fill in and submit by e-mail the application form, appending your Curriculum Vitae in a Europass format and a motivation letter stating the aim, the duration and the objectives of the traineeship. The use of English or French is strongly encouraged to facilitate the process.

If you don’t submit the complete set of documents as indicated above, your application will be automatically excluded and not taken into consideration. In this case, no further communication from the Agency will follow.

We strongly encourage to send your application well in advance of your proposed start date, in order to allow enough time for our administrative procedure as well as for you to get all necessary documentation to submit prior to your start date.

A specific agreement between the school/university responsible for the trainee, the trainee him– or herself and ERA will have to be prepared and signed in order to finalise the procedure. This document will state the objective(s) and the duration of the traineeship, will contain the contact details of the school/university, will declare that the trainee has a proper health insurance coverage and that the traineeship is unpaid.

The student traineeship program is open to students having an obligation to undergo a period of traineeship in their curricula. It is necessary to be enrolled in a student program throughout its entire duration.

Due to the high number of applications, not all requests can be accommodated.

Qualifications

However, a limited number of nationals of other third countries are also accepted according to the available resources and in accordance with the operational priorities of ERA.

A copy of the passport or the national identity card shall be provided together with the application as proof of nationality.
