PhD Programs

The IMT School offers six interdisciplinary PhD Programs in  5 different fields with the common mission of fostering interdisciplinary research and benefiting from the complementarity of multiple methodologies inferred from subjects such as economics, management, engineering, computer science, statistics, applied mathematics, physics, cognitive and social neuroscience, archaeology, art history, and cultural heritage analysis and management, which offer a unique and characterizing set of skills in the area of analysis and management of a plurality of systems. Beginning with the 2022/2023 Academic Year, the IMT School is the leading institution of the National Doctorate in Cybersecurity organized in collaboration with other universities and research institutions with the goal of training a new generation of scholars, and future decision-makers, who can support and increase the resilience of citizens, public institutions and businesses with respect to cyber attacks.

PhD Program in Cognitive, Computational and Social Neurosciences

This research-based, multidisciplinary PhD Program focuses on cognitive, computational and social neurosciences, and integrates basic neuroscience methods with traditional experimental psychology and cognitive neuroscience. The track prepares researchers capable of developing innovative research strategies and creative ideas to monitor, understand and predict human behavior, mind and its complexity. 

PhD Program in Cultural Systems

Cultural Systems trains students to undertake cutting-edge research and/or to operate as a high level, innovative cultural heritage professionals within a unique multidisciplinary environment. It offers two tracks, Analysis and Management of Cultural Hertitage (AMCH) and Museum Studies (MUST). Both research- and practice-oriented courses are included in the program, which aims at training highly innovative researchers and qualified professionals, thus opening career paths in museums, cultural institutions and industries, and Academia. Students are encouraged to spend part of their training period abroad, both within the Erasmus+ framework and ad hoc mobility agreements.

PhD Program in Economics, Analytics and Decision Sciences

The PhD Program in Economics, Analytics and Decision Sciences trains students to undertake cutting-edge research in a wide range of economic and social disciplines with a unique multidisciplinary approach that relies on the unifying language of statistics and data science, as well as on selected tools from computer science and psychology.

PhD Program in Systems Science

The aim of SyS is to equip students with the necessary skills to conduct advanced research in the field of analysis and design of a range of technological, natural, economic, and social systems. This is achieved through the use of descriptive and predictive mathematical models. SyS students work on diverse projects, such as improving the efficiency of industrial systems, comprehending the complexity of biological, ecological, social, and economic systems, and ensuring the reliability and autonomy of cyber-physical systems that combine physical modules and software. The potential application areas of SyS include several industries such as automotive, aerospace, communication, chemical, infrastructure, energy, biomedicine, financial, and manufacturing, as well as governmental sectors such as central banking and official statistics.

PhD Program in Management of Digital Transformation

The main goal of the PhD program in Management of Digital Transformation is to train a new executive class to respond to the management needs of digital transition processes, drawing inspiration from and responding to the needs outlined in the PNRR to bring businesses and institutions together with universities and research.

The MDT doctoral program pursues this goal by combining a "horizontal" approach to academic activities with a "vertical" approach to research. The PhD Program offers a cross-disciplinary educational offer of a multidisciplinary nature dedicated to digital transition issues addressed from a cultural, economic, social, engineering, IT, legal, managerial, neuroscientific, and psychological perspective.

Distinguishing feature of the PhD Program in MDT is the corporate involvement: Research activities entail a specific in-depth study on a highly-qualified scientific project highly-qualified scientific project in line with the student's curricular profile and motivations, developed jointly by an academic advisor and a company representative.

National PhD in Cybersecurity

The National PhD in Cybersecurity prepares you to analyze and solve a broad spectrum of cybersecurity-related problems, all with a high institutional, social, and industrial interest, with the primary objective of identifying practical solutions in various fields. Through a strong multi- and inter-disciplinary approach, the PhD program provides a basic exposure to all such wide-ranging spectrum of competences and focuses on four key thematic Specialization Curricula:

  • Foundational Aspects in Cybersecurity
  • Software, System, and Infrastructure Security
  • Data Governance & Protection
  • Human, Economic, and Legal Aspects in Cybersecurity

PhD graduates will possess the necessary technical knowledge and expertise on information technologies, will be able to understand the general socio-legal framework in which they operate and to design operational processes in line with fundamental-rights protection standards, regulatory obligations, international policies, and economic implications.

Description of Ideal Candidate

The PhD Programs at the IMT School attracts students from around the world, providing a truly international environment. English is the official language of the School. Moreover, all students will have the opportunity to spend periods abroad at research institutes, laboratories or universities, both within the Erasmus+ framework and through ad hoc mobility agreements.

Most IMT School PhD Graduates have reached prominent roles in academics, governmental institutions, public and private companies or professions across the globe.

Applications are open to candidates who meet the following requirements: 

1. Degree: 

  • "Laurea Magistrale" or "Specialistica" (according to DM no. 509, of November 3, 1999), or a four- or five-year degree (according to the previous rules of the Italian higher education system) obtained in Italy;

  • Foreign degrees with a minimum duration equivalent to 4 years (full time). The 4-year duration should be considered a minimum but not sufficient requirement: the Selection Committees will assess the eligibility of degrees. 
  • Applicants who obtain their degree by no later than October 31st, 2024, can also apply. These candidates will be admitted to the selection procedure “with reserve” and must provide their degree certificate by the date of enrollment, or they will be excluded from the Program.

Cost/funding for participants

SCHOLARSHIPS

The scholarship amount is 16,243.00 Euros/year and shall be disbursed in monthly installments. For any research or training activities at universities or research centers abroad, the scholarship amount is increased by 50% for the first nine (9) months.

Scholarships are subject to the payment of social security contributions (INPS) managed separately under Article 2, paragraph 26 of Law no. 335 of August 8, 1995, as amended, with two-thirds paid by the Administration and one- third by the scholarship recipient.

Admitted candidates who have already benefited from a PhD scholarship in Italy cannot be assigned another one. The scholarship has a maximum duration of three (3) years and is subject to annual confirmation: according to articles 15 and 16 of the IMT School PhD Regulations, students must complete all the activities provided for each academic year.

If a student withdraws or is excluded within 45 days from the beginning of the Program, they are not entitled to the scholarship. The scholarship will be awarded to the next eligible candidate according to the final ranking. For this reason, the first scholarship payment will be made only after the successful completion of the first 45 days of the program.

If a student registers after 45 days from the beginning of the Program, he/she is entitled to the scholarship starting from the actual date of enrollment.
