Overview

Each year UNIDROIT grants scholarships to a limited number of high-performing post-graduate law students, lawyers, academics and government officials to undertake research in the UNIDROIT library. Over the last 25 years, the Research Scholarship Programme has hosted nearly 400 researchers from 65 countries.

The Programme is funded by extra-budgetary contributions. The number of scholarships awarded each year depends on the available funding.

Details

Academics, law students, Government officials and members of the legal profession from all over the world may also apply to undertake research at the UNIDROIT Library as visiting scholars or researchers. Unlike the scholarship programme, visiting scholars and researchers must self-fund their research, however applicants may use their approval from UNIDROIT as visiting scholars or researchers to support their requests to potential sponsors to finance their stay in Rome.

Scholarship candidates must apply during the annual application window (usually between July – September each year). Researchers may apply at any time.

For further information please contact the UNIDROIT Scholarship, Internship and Research Programme Coordinator, Ms Laura Tikanvaara: l.tikanvaara@unidroit.org.

ABOUT UNIDROIT

The International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT) is an independent intergovernmental Organisation with its seat in the Villa Aldobrandini in Rome. Its purpose is to study needs and methods for modernising, harmonising and co-ordinating private and in particular commercial law as between States and groups of States and to formulate uniform law instruments, principles and rules to achieve those objectives.

Set up in 1926 as an auxiliary organ of the League of Nations, the Institute was, following the demise of the League, re-established in 1940 on the basis of a multilateral agreement, the UNIDROIT Statute.

Cost/funding for participants

A scholarship (average duration: two months, minimum duration: six weeks, depending also on the special terms and conditions attached to each scholarship) may cover all or part of the cost of living in Rome for the designated period, but beneficiaries are in principle expected to cover their own travel expenses and their medical insurance for the duration of their scholarship.

Candidates who are not granted a scholarship may nevertheless be accepted for a period of independent research at their own expense.
