Overview

MADRE is an international women's human rights organization. We partner with community-based women's groups worldwide facing war and disaster – our sister organizations. MADRE internships are a great way to learn new skills, gain work experience and support MADRE's work with women and families worldwide.

Details

Internships take place at the MADRE office in Manhattan. MADRE offers three internship sessions throughout the year: Summer (June-August), Fall (September-December), and Spring (January-May).

Communications Intern

Interns will learn practical skills of:

  • Monitoring international news reports related to MADRE program areas and partnerships;
  • Assisting with producing and editing audio and video contentt;
  • Assisting in creating content, designing and producing MADRE print materials and newsletters;
  • Assisting with e-communications to MADRE's membership;
  • Conducting research and drafting content for MADRE's website;
  • Assisting with social networking initiatives;
  • Providing research assistance as needed;
  • Assisting with event planning and outreach.

Human Rights Program Intern

Length of Internship: 3 to 6 months

Interns will learn practical skills of:

  • Conducting research and compiling reports on issues related to MADRE’s thematic initiatives:1) Rape as a Weapon of War; 2) Climate Justice and Gender Justice; 3) Sexual Rights;
  • Developing monitoring and evaluation frameworks, data collection tools, and processing information received from partners;
  • Monitoring UN debates and processes on issues related to MADRE's work;
  • Providing support with programmatic updates, highlights, and reports to donors;
  • Providing administrative and logistics support to Program Staff.

Human Rights Legal Advocacy Intern

Deadlines: March 15 (Summer); July 15 (Fall); November 15 (Spring)

Interns will learn practical skills of:

  • Representing MADRE at meetings and in coalition work with other NGOs and UN contacts;
  • Following and participating in UN processes, such as the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) and others, as needed;
  • Drafting, editing and submitting memoranda, reports, and testimony to UN human rights bodies, as needed;
  • Conducting research for publications and program work on gender dimensions of women’s health and violence against women; and peace building and women’s political participation;
  • Monitoring, investigating, and documenting human rights developments in the field, and reporting findings quickly and regularly;
  • Developing and implementing advocacy strategies for addressing the abuses documented;
  • Collaborating with MADRE Program and Human Rights Advocacy staff.

Humanitarian Aid Campaign Intern

Deadlines: March 15 (Summer); July 15 (Fall); November 15 (Spring)

Interns will learn practical skills of:

  • Engage in ongoing aid campaigns by soliciting, gathering, and inventorying material donations that meet the specific needs of MADRE’s sister organizations around the world.
  • Maintain and update large donor and inventory databases.
  • Research women’s human rights issues as background for student outreach and new campaign launches.
  • Design and write promotional materials in a variety of media.
  • Assist with planning and execution of donor events and fundraisers.
  • Position may involve lifting and transporting boxes around New York City; interns will also provide occasional administrative support to MADRE staff.
  • Experienced interns may have the opportunity to launch their own humanitarian aid campaigns

Human Rights Program Intern

Requirements:

  • Knowledge and/or experience in gender and human rights issues
  • Strong analytical, writing, and communications skills; excellent organizational skills;
  • Full proficiency (reading, writing, and speaking) in Spanish is required
  • Knowledge and/or experience in monitoring and evaluation for nonprofits
  • Ability to be flexible and to work independently, yet in close coordination with peers and supervisors;
  • Ability to work in a multi-cultural team environment.

Humanitarian Aid Campaign Intern

Requirements:

  • Passionate about human rights and social justice;
  • Some research, writing, and data/ inventory skills;
  • Knowledge of MS Office suite, Technologically savvy;
  • Some experience in soliciting donations.
