Overview

Contestants may enter Nikon's Small World Photomicrography and Video Competitions by uploading digital images and/or movies directly to our secure servers.

Details

  1. Anyone over the age of 18 is eligible, with the exception of employees of Nikon, their families, the contest judges, and individuals engaged in the manufacture or sale of microscopes, related accessories or photographic equipment.

  2. Former first prizewinners are ineligible to win first prize in the three contests immediately following the contest they won, but can win other prizes.

  3. Any image that has won any other photomicrography competition is not eligible.

  4. Photomicrographs must be taken using a light microscope, such as one of the Nikon series of microscopes. All types of light microscopy and specimens are acceptable. Electron and any other microscopes that do not capture imagery using optical light technology are not permitted.

  5. Macro Photography is not permitted.

  6. The use of Nikon equipment is not required.

  7. No purchase is necessary to enter or win.

  8. Images must be submitted as follows:

    1. Digitally: Uploading to the Small World Competition entry area here. Images must be in jpeg, png, psd, or tiff format and videos in flv, mp4, mpg, wmv, avi, mov format. (Please submit the highest quality image with regard to file size, bit depth, and resolution.)

    2. For images on film, a 35mm mounted transparency will be accepted. Glass mounts are not accepted.

  9. Small World in Motion entries are further limited to:

    1. Movie length of no more than 60 seconds

    2. The use of sound is not permitted

    3. It is not permitted to add graphics of any kind

    Nikon reserves the right to edit winning movies for format and length for promotional purposes.

  10. Each entrant may submit up to three images in each contest for judging. A completed and signed official entry form, facsimile, or complete Internet entry form must be used. A separate entry form must be used for Small World and Small World in Motion.

  11. Entries will be judged on:

    1. Originality

    2. Informational Content

    3. Technical Proficiency

    4. Artistic and Visual Impact

  12. Entries must be received no later than April 30, 2024. Entries received after that date will be automatically rolled in to the following year’s competition.

Description of Ideal Candidate

ELIGIBILITY: The Nikon Small World Photomicrography Competition (the “Competition”) is open only to individuals who are at least eighteen (18) years old at the time of entry and have access to a light microscope. The following individuals are not eligible to enter the Competition: (a) employees of Nikon Instruments Inc., Shaw & Todd, Inc., their respective parent companies and affiliated companies, and/or the immediate family (spouse, parents, siblings and children) and household members of each such employee, (b) the Competition Judges, regardless of the date of appointment, and/or their immediate family and household members, and/or (c) individuals engaged (as a business owner or employee) in the manufacture, distribution, and/or sale of microscopes, related accessories, and/or photographic equipment. PARTICIPATION IN THE COMPETITION AND/OR THE RECEIPT OF ANY PRIZE MAY BE RESTRICTED OR VOID WHERE PROHIBITED.

Cost/funding for participants

PRIZES: There will be twenty (20) winners ranked from first (1st) place through twentieth (20th) place, plus Honorable Mention prizes, and prizes for images of distinction if and as determined by the Judges (collectively, the “Prizes”).

  • First Prize: Three Thousand U.S. Dollars ($3,000.00)
  • Second Prize: Two Thousand U.S. Dollars ($2,000.00)
  • Third Prize: One Thousand U.S. Dollars ($1,000.00)
  • Fourth Prize: Eight Hundred U.S. Dollars ($800.00)
  • Fifth Prize: Six Hundred U.S. Dollars ($600.00)
  • Sixth Prize: Four Hundred U.S. Dollars ($400.00)
  • Seventh, Eighth, Ninth and Tenth Prizes: Three Hundred U.S. Dollars ($300.00) each.
  • Eleventh, Twelfth, Thirteenth, Fourteenth, Fifteenth, Sixteenth, Seventeenth, Eighteenth, Nineteenth and Twentieth Prizes: Two Hundred U.S. Dollars ($200.00) each.
  • Honorable Mentions: One Hundred U.S. Dollars ($100.00) each. The number of Honorable Mention Prizes will be determined by the Judges in their sole discretion.
  • Images of Distinction: One (1) Nikon-branded promotional item, having a retail value of approximately Thirty-Five U.S. Dollars ($35.00) (the “Premium Item”). The number of Images of Distinction Prizes will be determined by the Judges in their sole discretion. Nikon may in its sole discretion, provide the winner with a Gift Card (defined below) in the amount of Thirty-Five U.S. Dollars ($35.00), in substitution of the Premium Item.
