North-South Centre of the Council of Europe - Traineeship (October session 2024)

The European Centre for Global Interdependence and Solidarity is an enlarged partial agreement of the Council of Europe created in 1989 to spread the values of the Council of Europe– human rights, democracy and the rule of law –  beyond the European continent.

The North-South Centre empowers civil society, in particular youth and women, through intercultural dialogue and global citizenship education, to play an active role in Council of Europe member states and neighbouring regions, under the principles of dialogue, partnership, solidarity and global interdependence.

These principles are put into practice through a bottom-up work approach which entails three specific courses of action undertaken by the North-South Centre:

• Advocacy: the push for the implementation of recommendations
• Capacity-building: the transfer of knowledge through educators and peers
• Awareness raising: contributing to the reflection and understanding of each individual’s role within a global interconnected society

This work is thus translated into cross-cutting activities fulfilling the mission of the North-South Centre and spreading the Council of Europe's standards. 

The North-South Centre of the Council of Europe offers traineeships twice a year for a period of three (minimum) to five (maximum) months.

Duties

The duties to which trainees are assigned include assisting with the preparation of activities, research, different types of drafting and other day-to-day administrative tasks.

The Council of Europe in brief - Human rights, Democracy, Rule of Law

The Council of Europe advocates freedom of expression and of the media, freedom of assembly, equality, and the protection of minorities. It has launched campaigns on issues such as child protection, online hate speech, and the rights of the Roma, Europe's largest minority. The Council of Europe helps member states fight corruption and terrorism and undertake necessary judicial reforms. Its group of constitutional experts, known as the Venice Commission, offers legal advice to countries throughout the world.

The Council of Europe promotes human rights through international conventions, such as the Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence and the Convention on Cybercrime. It monitors member states' progress in these areas and makes recommendations through independent expert monitoring bodies. Council of Europe member states no longer apply the death penalty.
