Founded in 1976, the Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the encouragement and advancement of minorities in all aviation and aerospace careers. You’ve got big plans for your future. An OBAP scholarship can help you reach them. With unprecedented demand for pilots, technicians, and crewmembers, now is a great time to pursue an aerospace career.

OBAP is dedicated to supporting minority interests and placement in aerospace careers. To date, OBAP has awarded $5.8 million in scholarships to more than 470 diverse recipients nationwide. The scholarships, made available through strengthened partnerships with key carriers and aviation-related businesses, allow award recipients to advance or pursue diverse aviation-related careers.

An active OBAP membership is required to apply.

Available scholarships

  • The OBAP Tech. Ops Pathway Scholarship
    • Creating pathways for those who keep the fleet flying.
    • Applicants who seek the diverse skills required in the field of Aviation Maintenance and are enrolled in an A&P program by the time of the award in August of 2023 are eligible for the OBAP Tech. Ops Scholarship. An active OBAP membership is required to apply for and receive this award.
  • The Dr. Aprille Joy Ericsson Scholarship for Academic Excellence
    • Supporting and celebrating students who are setting the standard academically.
    • Applicants currently enrolled in a STEM or aerospace degree-seeking program (2 or 4-year, or graduate program) are eligible for The Dr. Aprille Joy Ericsson Scholarship For Academic Excellence. An active OBAP membership is required to apply for and receive this award.
  • The OBAP Dreams2Careers Scholarship for Private Pilot and Instrument Pilot Training
    • Supporting the foundations of a successful career in flight. 
    • Applicants interested in beginning a career in aviation and/or pursuing a private pilot’s license are eligible for the OBAP Dreams2Careers Scholarship for Private Pilot and Instrument Pilot Training. An active OBAP membership is required to apply for and receive this award.
  • The OBAP Dreams2Careers Scholarship for Commercial Pilot Training
    • Creating opportunities for the leaders of the flight deck of the future.
    • Applicants currently pursuing their Commercial pilot rating are eligible for the OBAP Dreams2Careers Scholarship for Commercial Pilot Training. An active OBAP membership is required to apply for and receive this award.
  • The OBAP Dreams2Careers Scholarship for Advanced Pilot Training
    • Creating opportunities for the leaders of the flight deck of the future. 
    • Applicants currently pursuing advanced pilot ratings are eligible for the OBAP Dreams2Careers Scholarship for Advanced Pilot Training. An active OBAP membership is required to apply for and receive this award
  • The American Airlines Lt. Col. Luke Weathers Flight Academy Impact Scholarship for Pilot Training
    • Creating opportunities for the leaders of the flight deck of the future.
    • Applicants who have already completed their Private Pilot License and are also currently enrolled at the Lt. Col Luke Weathers Flight Academy are eligible for the American Airlines Lt. Col. Luke Weathers Flight Academy Impact Scholarship. An active OBAP membership is required to apply for and receive this award.
  • The OBAP United Aviate Scholarship
    • Applicants currently pursuing flight training who have been accepted to the United Aviate Academy are eligible to apply. An active OBAP membership is required to apply for and receive this award.

  • We encourage past recipients to apply for other scholarship opportunities.
  • Currently, all of our scholarships require applicants be part of a US-based flight training program, however, permanent residency is not required.

The OBAP Dreams2Careers Scholarship for Commercial Pilot Training

  • Maximum award - $7,500
  • Number of awards - 2

The OBAP Dreams2Careers Scholarship for Advanced Pilot Training

  • Maximum award - $5,000

The American Airlines Lt. Col. Luke Weathers Flight Academy Impact Scholarship for Pilot Training

  • Minimum award - maximum equivalency of 50% of the cost of remaining ratings (excluding PPL)
