Overview

We are convinced that all young people should have the opportunity to experience Europe – regardless of their social and regional origin, their educational background or their financial possibilities.

With our travel grants, the grant holders travel the continent independently and deal with current political and social issues, which they record in the form of reports or videos. They are the ones who are boldly telling new stories about Europe, making it more inclusive.

Travel Grants

The Schwarzkopf Foundation Young Europe believes that European diversity can best be understood by experiencing it. Our travel grants seek to enable young Europeans to explore and discover their continent, while tackling current political or social questions. By travelling, grantees becomes ambassadors for a united Europe.

The Call for Application for this years travel grants will be communicated this spring.

Why travel grants?

Europe means diversity. Experiencing this diversity is corner stone of European integration. Many young Europeans, however, do not get to travel internationally. For them, Europe remains unknown. By awarding travel grants, the Schwarzkopf Foundation seeks to enlarge the number of young travelers in Europe, which in turn fosters European integration and peaceful cooperation on our continent.

What is expected of me?

Our travel grants enable young Europeans to experience Europe. This should always take place by addressing a specific topic or question. The bigger topic is provided by our project partners (more on that below), the specific research focus, however, is up to you.

All travelers should conduct their independent research (interviews, surveys, etc.) and document their findings. The documentation can take the form of a written report, but can also be a series of photographs, a series of meaningful Instagram posts, a vlog, or a diary. You are responsible for planning your trip, finding accommodation, and selecting your travel destinations. All travels should be completed individually, e.g. not with friends or as part of a bigger group.

After the journey, our grantees are requested to submit a detailed report, not only reflecting on their experiences and impressions from their trips, but also explaining how they approached their research topic and what they found out.

Description of Ideal Candidate

The travel grants adress young adults Europe-wide from the age of 18 years. All information concerning travel requirements, application processes and contacts will soon be announced.

Who can apply?

  • We explicitly want to sponsor young Europeans, who so far have not traveled abroad only for a short period of time.
  • We are also particularly looking for applicants with a migration background, those living in rural areas, those attending vocational school, and those with a non-university track.
  • Most of our travel grants also require to be between the ages of 18 and 27 and to live in a European country.

Who should not apply?

We want to enable more Europeans to travel. Thus, if you have already traveled much privately or if you have been part of exchange programmes such as ERASMUS+, our travel grants are not for you. You should also not apply, if you are looking for a way to cover international traveling costs for attending a third-party event, such as a conference, a summer school, or other personal plans.
