Shell StartUp Engine UK is an acceleration programme for early to mid-stage energy startups looking to develop their capabilities and power business growth within the smart energy landscape.

Shell Startup Engine UK equips startups with the skills, connections and industry insights needed to maximise their chances of success.

The six-month programme is a structured and proven startup support methodology that has been successfully deployed by Shell to support startups across other programme locations, including Singapore, Brazil, the United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom.

Focus areas

This year’s UK programme will focus on startups looking to make a difference in three main areas: Low carbon power, Reducing emissions and Advanced mobility.

  • Low Carbon Power: Technology and commercial solutions to electrify the UK and beyond.
  • Reducing Emissions: Decarbonising industrial sectors, including energy, to make a material impact on emissions from operations.
  • Advanced Mobility: Innovative methods of electrifying transportation and driving take-up.

Description of Ideal Candidate

We are looking for startups from early to mid-stage that meet the following criteria:

  • Have a Minimum Viable Product established
  • Operating for less than 5 years
  • Revenue £0-£50M
  • Balance sheet £0-43M
  • 0-250 staff.

The programme will focus on startups operating in or entering the UK energy market.

To address economic disparity across the UK, we aim to engage startups beyond the established tech hubs. We also aim to ensure that we support founders who have historically been underrepresented at high levels of business leadership and represent a diversity of gender, ethnicity, life experience, region, and industry.

Apply to the 2024 Programme

Shell StartUp Engine UK runs from March to November, with the six-month programme beginning in late May.

  • March – April: Scouting for startups, including FastTrack invite-only events to pitch to Shell
  • May: Selection
  • End May: Programme begins
  • November: Programme ends with Demo Day.
