The South Centre’s internship programme offers an opportunity for students and young professionals to gain an understanding of the technical areas that the South Centre deals with.

Trade for Development

The Internship Programme in Trade for Development is designed to:

  • Give young professionals the opportunity to assist Trade for Development experts in undertaking research and analysis on international trade policy areas that are relevant to the protection and promotion of the development interests of developing countries.
  • Give them the opportunity to contribute to the capacity building of developing country trade negotiators and policy-makers in formulating trade policies that serve people-centred development.
  • Allow them to gain experience and to deepen their knowledge and understanding of the way trade affects the development objectives of countries in the South.
  • Help them develop their critical and analytical capacity.
  • Allow them to gain exposure of the various perspectives that exist on development issues in any work areas of the South Centre.
  • Provide the South Centre Trade for Development experts with the assistance of highly specialized and qualified students.

Health, Intellectual Property and Biodiversity

The Internship Programme in Intellectual Property is designed to:

  • Give young professionals the opportunity to assist Intellectual Property experts in undertaking research and analysis on intellectual property policy areas that are relevant to the protection and promotion of the development interests of developing countries.
  • Allow them to gain experience and to deepen their knowledge and understanding of the implications of the regulatory regimes such as intellectual property on innovation and access to knowledge.
  • Help them develop their critical and analytical capacity.
  • Allow them to gain exposure of the various perspectives that exist on development issues in any work areas of the South Centre.
  • Provide the South Centre Intellectual Property experts with the assistance of highly specialized and qualified students.

Sustainable Development and Climate Change

The Internship Programme in Sustainable Development and Climate Change is designed to:

  • Give young professionals the opportunity to assist Sustainable Development and Climate Change experts in undertaking research and analysis on one of the following international policy areas: financing for development; macroeconomic and global finance policy; global environmental governance, including on sustainable development, climate change and environmental management; global social issues such as migration, human rights and gender.
  • Give them the opportunity to contribute to the capacity building of developing country negotiators and policy-makers in formulating southern perspectives and policies on Sustainable Development and Climate Change issues.
  • Allow them to gain experience and to deepen their knowledge and understanding of the way international policy affects the development objectives of countries in the South.
  • Help them develop their critical and analytical capacity.
  • Allow them to gain exposure of the various perspectives that exist on development issues in any work areas of the South Centre.
  • Provide the South Centre’s Sustainable Development and Climate Change experts with the assistance of highly specialized and qualified students.

Other Areas - South-South and Triangular Cooperation (SSTrC)

The Internship Programme on South-South and Triangular Cooperation (SSTrC) is designed to:

  • Give young professionals the opportunity to assist SSTrC experts in undertaking research and analysis on SSTrC policy areas that are relevant to the promotion of SSTrC for the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
  • Give them the opportunity to contribute to the capacity building of developing country SSTrC practitioners and policy-makers in formulating strategies and policies.
  • Allow them to gain experience and to deepen their knowledge and understanding of how best to reach the full potential of SSTrC to promote economic development and implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
  • Help them develop their critical and analytical capacity.
  • Allow them to gain exposure to the various perspectives that exist on development issues in any work areas of the South Centre.
  • Provide the South Centre SSTrC experts with the assistance of highly specialized and qualified students.

All internship applications should include an Internship Application Form duly filled. 

Depending on the interests and availability of interns, internships may extend from three to six months and are full time (40 hours a week). The internship period may be extended upon mutual agreement.

Description of Ideal Candidate

Trade for Development

  • Be fluent in English (both spoken and written). Knowledge of French or Spanish would be an asset.
  • Have completed or be completing an advanced degree from a university or from an institution of equivalent status. Due to the multidisciplinary nature of the research carried out, students from different educational backgrounds are eligible (Economics, International Political Economy, International Relations, International Trade and Development, International Law).
  • Have a demonstrated interest in development issues.
  • Have proficient computer skills.
  • Be able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Be able to work in a multicultural environment.

Health, Intellectual Property and Biodiversity

  • Be fluent in English (both spoken and written). Knowledge of French or Spanish would be an asset.
  • Have completed or be completing a post-graduate degree in law, economics, sciences, international relations or related fields.
  • Have basic knowledge of intellectual property, innovation and access to knowledge issues either through study or work related experience.
  • Have a demonstrated interest in development issues.
  • Have proficient computer skills.
  • Be able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Be able to work in a multicultural environment.

Cost/funding for participants

Trade for Development

Internships are not remunerated. Except otherwise indicated to the intern in writing, travel expenses, including visa fees, to and from Geneva, will be the responsibility of the intern. In addition, interns shall also be responsible for their own insurance for illness and accidents.

Health, Intellectual Property and Biodiversity

The intern will receive a stipend of 2000 Swiss Francs per month. There shall be no other additional remuneration, subsidy, compensation or entitlement from the South Centre to the intern. Except otherwise indicated to the intern in writing, travel expenses, including visa fees, to and from Geneva, will be the responsibility of the intern. In addition, interns shall also be responsible for their own insurance for illness and accidents.

Sustainable Development and Climate Change (SDCC)

Internships are not remunerated unless otherwise specified. Except otherwise indicated to the intern in writing, travel expenses, including visa fees, to and from Geneva, will be the responsibility of the intern.
