Overview

Georgetown University’s Global Human Development Program is pleased to partner with the Peace Corps to offer the Paul D. Coverdell Fellowship Program for Returned Peace Corps Volunteers.

Details

The Global Human Development Program is a two year, full-time master’s degree that encompasses an innovative skills-based curriculum with built-in opportunities for experiential learning.

The curriculum covers core courses including the economics of development, international political economy, program design and implementation, monitoring and evaluation, quantitative and qualitative methodologies, finance and budgeting, and management.

In addition to the curriculum, students apply the skills and knowledge they are learning in the classroom to three different professional work experiences:

  1. The summer field project (a fully-funded 2-3 month international work placement);
  2. An internship at a relevant Washington DC-based international development organization/agency for at least one academic semester; and
  3. The Capstone Project (a two-semester client engagement project emphasizing project management and analysis).

GHD is a practitioner-focused program so one year of experience working in international development is required, with a minimum of two years of professional experience preferred. All applicants must have completed an undergraduate degree prior to proposed enrollment.

To be considered for the scholarships, applicants must submit all required application materials:

  • Online application
  • Personal statement
  • Supplemental data sheet
  • Official transcripts and test scores (GREs and TOEFL/IELTS)
  • Three letters of recommendation

The scholarships will be awarded based on the overall strength of the application. The deadline for admission is January 15.

The mission of the Global Human Development Program is to prepare the next generation of development professionals to work with public sector agencies, private businesses, and non-profit organizations to reduce world poverty, achieve human dignity, and make a difference in our global community.

Peace Corps volunteers have similar goals when they go abroad in service of local and global communities, and embody values that successful development practitioners need. Returned Peace Corps Volunteers bring in-depth knowledge of their country of service and its particular development challenges. By enrolling in the Global Human Development Program, Returned Peace Corps Volunteers are able to draw on their experiences to add to classroom discussions, expand on their understanding of the needs of the communities in which development practitioners serve, and continue to develop language and leadership skills.
