Details

CANADIAN STUDENTS CAN TAKE UP THE AWARD IN ONE OF THREE WAYS

  • Formal enrolment awards are intended for students who plan to enroll in a graduate program at an American university. The student must seek admission at the same time as they apply for a Fulbright award. The Traditional Fulbright Canada award would support the first nine months of the student’s graduate degree.
  • Research awards are intended for students enrolled in a graduate program at a Canadian university, and who wish to conduct research in the United States that will support their Canadian degree. The Traditional Fulbright Canada award would support the student’s nine month academic year in the United States.
  • Independent research awards are intended for researchers who have completed an undergraduate degree or a master’s degree at a Canadian university and who wish to pursue one academic year of independent research in the United States.

AFFILIATION

All grantees must have an approved affiliation with an appropriate host (i.e., a university or other research-oriented institution) in the United States and are responsible for securing such affiliation and documenting it in the application. Applicants are encouraged to establish an affiliation with the intended host institution at an early stage and ideally have a fallback position. Applicants must list their potential host institution(s) in the Statement of Grant Purpose.

Application

Canadian applicants interested in applying for a Traditional Fulbright Student award are asked to complete an online application.

About us

On August 1, 1946, President Harry Truman enacted legislation authorizing the international scholarship program bearing the name of Senator J. William Fulbright. Now, some 70 years later, Senator Fulbright's dream is a powerful reality. With more than 350,000 Fulbright alumni in more than 160 countries, the Fulbright program is the gold standard in academic exchange and a leader in public diplomacy.

The Foundation for Educational Exchange between Canada and the United States of America (aka Fulbright Canada) is a bi-national, treaty-based, non-governmental, not-for-profit organization with a mandate to identify the best and brightest minds in both countries and engage them in residential academic exchange. Fulbright Canada, which is currently celebrating its 30th anniversary, provides support to students, scholars, teachers, and independent researchers through a variety of programs which are open to individuals in all academic fields with the exception of medical training.

The mandate of Fulbright Canada is to enhance mutual understanding between the people of Canada and the people of the United States of America by providing support to outstanding individuals. These individuals conduct research, lecture, or enrol in formal academic programs in the other country. In doing so, Fulbright Canada aims to grow intellectual capacity, increase productivity, and assist in the shaping of future leaders.
