Overview

United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) is the first and foremost comprehensive national university in the United Arab Emirates. Founded in 1976 by the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, UAEU aspires to become a comprehensive, research-intensive university and currently enrolls approximately 14,000 Emirati and international students. UAEU has a legacy of offering quality graduate education since 1991. Over the last decade, our menu of graduate programs has expanded significantly to over 35 graduate degree programs at the Master’s and Doctorate levels with different orientations (professional and academic), which are offered by the nine different academic colleges.

The purpose of the Chancellor’s Fellowship is to attract excellent students by providing them financial assistance in their pursuit of higher education. Chancellor’s Fellowship depends on the availability of budget and is primarily provided to students in STEM and strategic areas of the country (renewable energy, transportation, health, water resources, technology, space)

Chancellor’s Fellowship for Graduate Students (Master and Doctoral) is divided into four main categories as follows:

1. Merit Fellowship Award

To receive the Merit Award, students are expected to have high academic credentials and maintain their academic success at the UAEU. The Merit Fellowship Award offers a financial assistance in form of partial tuition waiver to qualified students. Students in STEM and strategic areas of the country (renewable energy, transportation, health, water resources, technology, space) will have priority.

2. UAEU Staff and Families Fellowship Award

This Award offers financial assistance in the form of partial tuition waiver to qualified UAEU Staff and Families who wish to join graduate programs at UAEU. This will be helpful in the professional development of UAEU staff. Students in STEM and strategic areas of the country (renewable energy, transportation, health, water resources, technology, space) will have priority.

3. National Students Fellowship Award (other than UAEU staff and families)

This Award offers financial assistance in the form of partial tuition waiver to qualified national students who are not affiliated to UAEU. Students in STEM and strategic areas of the country (renewable energy, transportation, health, water resources, technology, space) will have priority.

4. Merit Fellowship Award for Existing Students

The purpose of this award is to encourage existing students to achieve excellence in their pursuit of higher education. This award depends on the availability of budget and is primarily provided to students in STEM and strategic areas of the country (renewable energy, transportation, health, water resources, technology, space). To receive this Merit Award, students must be enrolled in one of the UAEU graduate programs and have high academic achievements. The Merit Fellowship Award offers a financial assistance in form of partial tuition waiver to qualified students.

Description of Ideal Candidate

The CGS has established minimum requirements for admission to Master’s Programs.

Individual Master’s Programs may set additional and/or higher standards for admission. The minimum requirements are:

  1. A cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale or equivalent, in all undergraduate work;
  2. A Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from an accredited university recognized by the UAE Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research; and
  3. A score of at least 6.0 on the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) Academic exam or equivalent, for all disciplines delivered predominantly in English. This test score must be less than two years old at the time of application, with the following exceptions:
    • A native speaker of English who has completed his/her undergraduate education in an English-medium institution and in a country where English is the official language (see list of eligible native English speaking countries); or
    • An applicant with undergraduate degree from an English-medium institution who can provide evidence of acquiring a minimum TOEFL score of 500 on the paper-based test, or its equivalent, at the time of admission to his/her undergraduate program.

An applicant with a Bachelor degree recognized by the UAE Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research may be granted conditional admission into a Master’s program in one and only one of the following cases:

  1. An applicant with an IELTS score of 5.5, or its equivalent. Such a student must meet the following requirements during the period of conditional admission or be subject to dismissal (Preparation Course to Improve IELTS Course)
    • Must achieve a minimum IELTS score of 6.0, or its equivalent, by the end of the student’s first semester of study;
    • May take a maximum of six (6) credits hours in the first semester, not including intensive English courses;
    • Must achieve an overall GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in the first 9 credit hours of credit-bearing courses studied in the Master’s program.
  2. An applicant with an undergraduate cumulative GPA less than 3.0 but equal or higher than 2.5, or its equivalent. Such a student must meet the following requirements during the period of conditional admission or be subject to dismissal:
    • May take a maximum of nine (9) credits hours in the first semester of study;
    • Must achieve an overall GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in the first 9 credit hours of credit-bearing courses studied in the Master’s program.
  3. An applicant with an undergraduate cumulative GPA less than 3.0 but with relevant work experience factored into the calculation of the GPA to become equal or higher than 2.5. Such a student must meet the following requirements during the period of conditional admission or be subject to dismissal:
    • May take a maximum of nine (9) credits hours in the first semester of study;
    • Must achieve an overall GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in the first 9 credit hours of credit-bearing courses studied in the Master’s program.

A minimum IELTS score of 4.0 or equivalent is required for admission into a Master’s Program whose language of instruction is Arabic

Individual Master’s Programs with professional orientation may include specific provisions for factoring relevant work experience into the calculation of the GPA for conditional acceptance. These provisions must be approved by the Academic Council.

Merit Fellowship Award

  • Have Excellent Academic Standing (GPA ≥ 3.6/4.0).
  • Maintain a GPA ≥3.6/4.0 during study at UAEU.
  • Have no other financial sponsorship or award.

UAEU Staff and Families Fellowship Award

  • Have Good Academic Standing (GPA ≥ 3.3/4.0).
  • Maintain a GPA ≥ 3.3/4.0 during study at UAEU.
  • Have no other financial sponsorship or award.

National Students Fellowship Award (other than UAEU staff and families)

  • Have Good Academic Standing (GPA ≥ 3.3/4.0).
  • Maintain a GPA ≥ 3.3/4.0 during study at UAEU.
  • Have no other financial sponsorship or award.

Merit Fellowship Award for Existing Students

  • Have earned a minimum of 12 credit hours in a graduate program at UAEU. 
  • Have Excellent Academic Standing (GPA ≥ 3.6/4.0).
  • Maintain a GPA ≥ 3.6/4.0 during study at UAEU.
  • Have no other financial sponsorship or award.

Merit Fellowship Award

  • Benefits: 50% discount on tuition fees.
  • Duration: Valid until graduation as long as the student is abiding with the Student Eligibility conditions. 

UAEU Staff and Families Fellowship Award

Benefits:

  • National UAEU Staff: 30% discount on tuition fees.
  • International UAEU Staff: 25% discount on tuition fees.
  • Spouse and Children of UAEU Employees: 20% discount on tuition fees.

Duration:

  • Valid until graduation as long as the student is abiding with the Student Eligibility conditions. 

National Students Fellowship Award (other than UAEU staff and families)

  • Benefits: 20% discount on tuition fees.
  • Duration: Valid until graduation as long as the student is abiding with the Student Eligibility conditions.

Merit Fellowship Award for Existing Students

  • Benefits: 50% discount on tuition fees.
  • Duration: Valid until graduation as long as the student is abiding with the Student Eligibility conditions. 

In case the student fails to fulfill the above conditions, the fellowship will be suspended, and he/she shall be entitled to receive that fellowship again if the reasons are removed.
