Overview

Young Weizmann Scholars is a program at the Weizmann Institute that is designed for undergraduate students in Israeli institutions of higher learning who are studying science. The program was developed to support and develop the interest of undergraduate students in pursuing a career in the sciences and strengthen their curiosity and commitment through real laboratory experiences.

Participation in the program provides a unique educational opportunity to join a research group and be involved in experimental or theoretical research under the direct guidance of scientists at the Institute.

As a participant in the program, you will be required to join the activities of your research group for at least four hours per week for eight months throughout the academic year, in order to maximize the success and benefits of the program.

Alternatively, the work can be done during the summer months in a more concentrated fashion i.e. full days for two months.

Description of Ideal Candidate

If you are a science major in your second or third year of a three-year program, or in your fourth year of a four-year program, then you are eligible to apply. If you are a student of Mathematics & Computer Science, you are eligible to apply to the program in the third year of a three-year program or in the fourth year of a four-year program.

Applicants to the program must meet the following minimum academic requirements:

  • Candidates must have a sincere interest in scientific research.
  • Candidates are not required to have prior experience with scientific research, but having such experience is an advantage.
  • Candidates must be fluent in English.
  • Candidates must have a grade point average of at least 85.

While the primary and obvious benefit of this program is educational - the privilege of being part of a research group and contributing to scientific research at the Institute -participants in the program also receive a more tangible benefit: A grant of NIS 15,000, received in two equal payments. This money is designed to cover any expenses and to make it easier to participate in the program’s activities.
