Legally speaking, everyone in Japan is required to have healthcare insurance. Thus, expats get the healthcare standards given to Japanese nationals. Japan is known to have quality healthcare which is supported by them having the highest life expectancy in the whole world.
When you land in Japan, you will need to register for the Japanese National Health Insurance. This has two types: First is the Japanese National Health Insurance that is so called Kokumin Kenko Hoken, that is made available fo currently unemployed people, those working less than 20 hours a week, and students; Second is the Japanese Health Insurance that is known also as Kenko Koken, that is applicable to all full-time employees. Both types assures that 70% of health costs in Japan will be shouldered by the Government while 30% will be a cost to its users.
If you will be staying for more than 90 days in Japan, make sure you register to Japanese National Health Insurance or the Kokumin Kenko Hoken.
