Work Visas in Japan

The type of work visa you are to secure for Japan will always be dependent on the work you are about to get into. Specific work visas applied to the following occupations below:

The Government of Japan have released two types of this Specified Skilled Worker Visa:

  • Specified Skills Visa 1-SSV1 - The SSV1 will be for a period of five years and will allow for limited renewals. Entrants will NOT be allowed to bring family members. Holders of the SSV1 can apply to change their visa status to the SSV2.
  • Specified Skills Visa 2-SSV2 -  Unlike the previous visa, this visa may be renewed indefinitely and workers in possession of this visa may be able to bring their family to Japan. The SSV2 (beginning in 2021) allows holders of this visa to bring family members and can be renewed indefinitely.

General requirements for this work visa may include:

  • A job offer from a company in Japan
  • A passport valid up to 6 months after the date of the Visa’s expiration
  • Visa application form
  • Japan Photo ID
  • Certificate of Eligibility

Another option you may consider if you want to work in Japan is getting a Working Holiday Visa.  This type of visa applies for younger workers ages 18 to 30, and enables them to stay in Japan for one year.
