Stay Safe in Singapore

In 2019, The Economist, an international publication, regarded Singapore as the top safest country in the world in terms of infrastructure and personal security. Most people would also be relieved to know that it ranked 2nd when it comes to digital security safety. Singapore is well-known to be a very safe place to live in. Although police visibility is very low, crimes remain controlled and people are able to go around safely at night. Perhaps the corporal punishments and strict rules of the country contributed to the overall discipline of its population. However, expats transferring to this country should take note the following tips to make sure your stay in the country would be totally safe and free from unwanted incidents against the rules in Singapore:

  • Although females can safely walk at night, better not pass by Geylang. Geylang is where the red light district of Singapore lies and prostitution is tolerated along with five other Singaporean districts. If you cannot avoid passing through this area, make sure you wear conservative clothing to not be mistaken for a sex worker.
  • Note that Singapore imposes maximum punishments for drug-related offenses. At certain amounts of drugs, death penalty is mandatory for those you will be convicted of trafficking, manufacturing, or trading drugs. On the other hand, any unauthorized consumption or possession of drugs may receive the punishment of jail, fines, or caning.
  • Overstaying and illegal entry in Singapore is not tolerated and is punishable by caning. This goes the same with crimes such as having a sexual intercourse with a person below 16 which is also considered rape, whether it is with consent or not.
  • Other crimes such as murder, kidnapping, unauthorized possession of firearms, and drug trafficking are all given the punishment of death.
  • Criticizing other religions is considered a crime in Singapore so better be careful when discussing them.
  • The LGBT community is not recognized in Singapore. Thus, homosexuality  is given a sentence of 2 years in prison among other punishments such as fines, deportation, beatings and lashings.
  • If you are planning to drive your own car in Singapore, orient yourself very well with traffic rules. Traffic violations in the country are imported with large fines.
