The AKS Graduate Fellowship Program is a Non-degree research fellowship (6 months) at the Graduate School of Korean Studies (GSKS), Academy of Korean Studies (AKS). The Fellowship Period starts from September 2026 to February 2027.

What Is the AKS Graduate Fellowship?

The AKS Graduate Fellowship brings selected international graduate students to Korea for six months of focused research in Korean Studies. Fellows are hosted at GSKS (AKS), get access to top libraries and archives, receive faculty guidance, and join a research community. It’s non-degree: you remain enrolled at your home university while conducting research at AKS.

The Graduate School of Korean Studies (GSKS), the Academy

of Korean Studies(AKS), which is responsible to the Ministry of Education, is a research-oriented graduate school in the fields of humanities and social sciences pertinent to Korea. It was established in 1980 with the aim of nurturing scholars who will contribute to the development and globalization of Korean studies.

Since then, GSKS has been providing intensive research-oriented education through eminent professors’ close mentoring of students. Currently, approximately 300 students, including about 130 international students from 35 different countries, are enrolled in the Master’s and doctoral degree program at GSKS.

Eligibility (Simple Checklist)

You should meet all of these:

  1. Nationality/Education Route
    • You are a foreign national, or you are Korean but educated entirely outside Korea (from primary school through university).
  2. Academic Status (pick one)
    • Enrolled in a Master’s program at an overseas university, or
    • Enrolled in a Doctoral program at an overseas university, or
    • ABD in a Master’s program at an overseas university Note: ABD in a doctoral program is not eligible for this fellowship.
  3. Field/Topic
    • Your topic is Korean-studies related (history, literature, linguistics, anthropology, sociology, religion, philosophy, politics, culture, etc.).
    • Korean language skills are preferred (not strictly required).
  4. Repeat Rule
    • If you have already been an AKS Graduate Fellow, you cannot apply again.
