Our Mission: To educate individuals with the global understanding necessary to address the challenges of our interdependent world. With the world as our classroom, our programs integrate multiple-country study, interdisciplinary coursework, and experiential learning for meaningful engagement in the global community.
Exploring countries in Europe, South America, Africa and Asia, this voyage gives participants a truly global study abroad experience on our floating campus!

You’ll experience a wide range of cultures and histories — including the rich Amazon forest of Brazil; the majestic wildlife of South Africa; the urban center of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam; and a whole lot more — all while living and learning aboard a ship you’ll call home with a community that’s designed to build friendships for life.

Traditional Undergraduate Student Requirements
Semester at Sea requires students to meet our standards to cultivate a learning experience worthy of traveling the world. We welcome students of any sex, gender identity, race, disability status, veteran status, nationality, or ethnicity, to apply for admission. Please take a moment to review what we are looking for in a student.
- Students must be enrolled full-time in a degree-granting program at an accredited college/university (domestic or international)
- Students must have completed at least one full term at the post-secondary level
- Students must demonstrate at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA and be in good academic standing, although in some cases, additional evidence of academic support may be requested to review an application holistically
- Students must have their school’s judicial affairs office complete a disciplinary clearance form at time of application
- Students must demonstrate their writing skills in a 300-500 word essay as indicated on the application

Cost/funding for participants
ISE AWARDS $5 MILLION IN FINANCIAL AID ANNUALLY.
To be eligible, students do not necessarily need to qualify for standard forms of financial aid (such as Pell Grants) on their home campuses. Applicants are strongly encouraged to file the FAFSA and submit the Student Aid Report to ISE along with tax returns from the most recent tax year and any supplemental information that might be helpful in our review.
International students are welcome to apply for any ISE scholarships. We ask that you submit a statement of your parent’s income, with an English translation and conversion to US dollars, in lieu of the FAFSA and tax forms.
Please note: Semester at Sea scholarship review committees will review applications based on the criteria and terms established for each individual award. Scholarships will be awarded only if a fully qualified applicant is identified by the committee. Semester at Sea is not obligated to award any scholarship if a qualified candidate is not identified by the scholarship review committee.
