About Us

Transitions was founded in 1999 and over the past 24 years has built up a reputation as one of Central Europe’s leading journalism educators. To date, more than 13,650 journalists from around the world have passed through Transitions’ training programs, which have specialized in journalism and new media instruction.

Throughout the year, Transitions offers courses focused on a number of beats and methods of reporting. The courses include initial online sessions before students arrive in Prague and a minimum of one week of lectures and reporting experience in the Czech Republic, led by top-notch journalists working for either international (the BBC, AP, NPR, The EconomistThe New York Times) or Czech media. The Transitions Media Academy study abroad programs are reporting-based, which means that after morning lectures, students get out of the classroom and report real stories under the guidance of their instructors. At Transitions we believe in close, personalized attention to each student, and instructors provide individualized assistance and guidance for every student as they pitch, develop, and write their stories.

Since 1999, Transitions has hosted students from hundreds of overseas universities as students in our courses and as interns in our office. Leading institutions in Asia have contracted Transitions to design unique programs for their students at our European base in Prague. For the last few years, we have hosted large groups of students from leading universities in Hong Kong – Hong Kong Baptist University and the Chinese University of Hong Kong. In the summer of 2015, we were proud to welcome our first group of students from mainland China, from the prestigious Shanghai International Studies University (SISU).

Transitions has hosted students from hundreds of overseas universities as students in our courses and as interns in our Prague office. We have cooperated with universities in Asia, Europe and North America, and we even offer the option for universities or academic groups to work with us to design unique programs for their students.

Transitions also offers internships. Interns work at Transitions magazine, which is a leading Internet news magazine covering Central and Eastern Europe, the Balkans, and the former Soviet Union. Interns help review the press and other sources for topics, and are then assigned a news item of 250-300 words to write on deadline. The experience resembles an international newsroom and quickly gives students knowledge of the issues and events shaping the post-communist region, as well as a stable collection of news clips to use for further employment. Transitions also offers internships in our business/marketing, finance, and development/grants departments.
