Overview

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) offers a traineeship programme targeted towards recent university graduates who are at the beginning of a new professional career. The purpose of the programme is to provide trainees with an understanding of the Centre and its role within the activities of the European Union while also providing an opportunity to acquire practical knowledge and professional experience.

Details

The duration of traineeships 2026 is between a minimum of five months and a maximum of nine months. Successful candidates will have an education and background relating to the activities of ECDC.

Kindly note that you must have completed and have been awarded a university degree; proof of this award must be provided with your application.

Please, be informed that Trainees are expected to start the programme between March and June 2022. If your situation doesn’t allow you to start at the latest in June 2022, you are welcome to send an application next year. 

The objectives of the ECDC traineeship programme are to:

  • Provide recent university graduates with a unique and first-hand experience of ECDC;
  • Provide an understanding of the objectives and goals of ECDC's coordination role in identifying, assessing and communicating current and emerging threats to human health from communicable diseases in the European Union;
  • Enable trainees to acquire practical experience and knowledge of the day-today work of the Centre's units;
  • Provide the opportunity for recent university graduates to put into practice knowledge acquired during their studies, and in particular in their specific areas of competence;
  • Contribute to the professional development of recent university graduates and thereby facilitate their entry into professional life.

ECDC through its traineeships programme:

  • Benefits from the input of enthusiastic graduates, who can provide new ideas and up-to-date academic knowledge, thereby enhancing the everyday work of ECDC;
  • Creates a pool of people with first-hand experience and training in European procedures, who will be better prepared to collaborate and co-operate with ECDC in the future;
  • Creates long-term "goodwill ambassadors" for European ideas and values both within the European Union and outside.

Description of Ideal Candidate

In order to be eligible, candidates must have:

  • Nationality/citizenship of an EU Member State, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein.
    Holding a residence permit is not sufficient enough.
  • Completed their studies and been awarded a full university degree by the closing date for applications.
  • A very good command of English (the language of day-to-day operations at ECDC). Knowledge of additional EU languages is an asset.
  • Not benefited from any previous traineeship or employment (formal or informal, paid or unpaid) within any EU institution, agency, body or delegation.

Cost/funding for participants

Traineeship grant

  • ECDC pays a monthly grant and a travel allowance to compensate the expenses incurred at the beginning and at the end of the traineeship from the place of residence.

  • The amount of the traineeship grant is decided by ECDC on an annual basis. The revised amount will apply from 1 January of the concerned year. Please note that this review can result in an increase or decrease of the traineeship grant amount.

  • The exact amount for the traineeship grant for 2025 has not yet been decided but will be communicated to selected candidates ahead of the interviews. For reference, the monthly 2024 traineeship grant was 1 913.32 EUR.

    Insurance
  • We provide all Trainees with accident insurance however Trainees must take out valid health insurance valid in Sweden, prior to the start of their traineeship. Proof of this insurance will be requested prior to starting.
