Details

Mission: When we connect with people different from us, it is easy to see that we are not so different after all.

President Eisenhower’s belief that “peaceful relations between nations requires understanding and mutual respect between individuals” is as relevant today as when he first envisioned our organization nearly six decades ago. Today, our mission continues to resonate with members across the globe, yet we are ever changing in our quest to provide expanded opportunities that engage a new generation of globally minded citizens.

People to People International (PTPI) creates lasting cross-cultural connections between everyday citizens around the world to help them explore global issues, serve and enrich their diverse communities, and become effective leaders in creating a more peaceful world.

OUR MISSION is to enhance international understanding and friendship through educational, cultural, and humanitarian activities involving the exchange of ideas and experiences directly among peoples of different countries and diverse cultures.

OUR VISION is that a cross-cultural network of engaged and knowledgeable everyday citizen leaders will be an active force in creating and sustaining a more peaceful world.

With a presence in more than 160 countries, PTPI participation knows no boundaries as members and friends work together to foster cross-cultural understanding in order to be an active force in creating and sustaining a more peaceful world.

The office of the PTPI European Council is in Brussels, Belgium, where we have had a presence since 1970.  We provide a Europe wide registration, lobby and representation service.  Brussels, the ‘Capital of Europe‘ is a bubbling melting pot of cultures. This is reflected in the city’s wide range of businesses and associations. There are people from each corner of the world and every walk of life, living and working in Belgium. This makes PTPI an ideal organization to connect the dots. We offer people a space to develop friendships while building strong communities. We deliver activities for adults, young people and children.

We are a member-driven community, supported by volunteers and through private funding. We operate like a cooperative, and we take advantage of best practice from business and technology. PTPI has a strong global presence. We also have a local reputation as a reliable social partner and support to business.

VOLUNTEER

People, there is no better investment.

Love what PTPI stands for?  So do we. If you are looking for a place or project to volunteersome time, you have come to the right team. Together with our partners, we support people looking to volunteer, find a great opportunity to do just that.  Maybe, you would like to develop your own idea or initiative. We can also support you to make that happen.

Do something in your community – you will enjoy it, and your community will be stronger for it. Volunteering is a great way to make friends and see places you may not otherwise get to see. It is also a major support to community development during these complex times.

Volunteering with People to People International in Belgium

Why do people volunteer? – People enjoy volunteering for a number of reasons. Some are keen to learn a new skill; others want to have fun and meet new people; others will have time on their hands and are happy to do their bit; and there are people who are devoted to a cause and want to make a difference. We all have skills and possibly small amounts of time to give something back to our community. Whatever your reason for wanting to volunteer, we are pleased that you have taken this step to get involved.

Why in English? – English is so frequently used in Brussels that it has become almost a “lingua franca” for the foreigners arriving here from all over the world. Our volunteer opportunities will be accessible to you whether you are a native English speaker or come from any other country. This is the reality of Brussels: Italians and Swedes may work together with people from Japan and Belgium to support an organization initially launched by a group of people from Ireland.

There are some organizations where other languages are an advantage, and we will make this clear in the opportunity description.

What are the conditions?  Here we provide a list of things that are important to think about:

  • We work mostly with organizations where English is the main language of communication. There are other groups covering the Dutch and French-speaking communities.
  • We are keen to support non-profit organizations, charities and NGOs (local sports clubs, the arts, scouting groups and faith-based organizations for example).
  • Note that Belgian law is quite intricate in the area of volunteering and we are not able to offer a salary, but can/do agree on expenses where needed.
  • Respect for all parties involved is very important. Opportunity descriptions will be as complete as possible, partner organizations must treat volunteers with due care and attention and, in turn, volunteers must meet the commitment they have made.
