Overview

SBM Offshore is a global leader in the provision of floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) solutions. Fugitive emissions from FPSOs are a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions, and SBM Offshore is committed to reducing these emissions in support of its net-zero emissions goal by 2050. This graduation project provides an opportunity for a student to develop a valuable tool to estimate fugitive emissions from FPSOs

Details

Project Scope

The primary objective of this graduation project is to develop a versatile tool that can effectively estimate fugitive emissions from FPSOs and help manage their impact. This aligns with findings from IPCC reports indicating significant contributions of fugitive emissions to overall greenhouse gases in offshore operations (Source: IPCC, 2021, "Climate Change 2021: The Physical Science Basis").

The tool should be able to generate estimates at two stages of the FPSO’s life cycle:

  • Early Stage Estimation: At the very beginning of FPSO projects, when limited information is available. This will allow for preliminary assessments of fugitive emissions and early identification of potential mitigation measures.
  • Detailed Estimation: At the end of FPSO projects, when comprehensive engineering databases are complete with details of the FPSO’s equipment, including valves, flanges, pipes, and seals. This will allow for more accurate estimates of fugitive emissions and a better understanding of their sources.

The tool should be data-driven and utilize relevant information sources, such as industry standards, equipment specifications, and historical data from similar FPSOs. It should also consider factors such as the type of FPSO, its age, equipment configuration, operating conditions, and maintenance practices.

Timeline

The following timeline is proposed for completing the graduation project. This is to be further agreed with the student:

  • Month 1-2: Literature Review and Tool Design
    • Conduct a comprehensive literature review on fugitive emissions from FPSOs.
    • Identify relevant data sources and methodologies for estimating fugitive emissions.
    • Design the structure and functionality of the tool.
  • Month 3-5: Tool Development and Data Collection
    • Develop the code for the tool using appropriate programming languages.
    • Collect relevant data from SBM Offshore’s engineering databases and industry sources.
    • Integrate the collected data into the tool.
  • Month 6-7: Tool Testing and Refinements
    • Conduct testing of the tool using historical data from similar FPSOs.
    • Refine the tool’s algorithms and parameters based on testing results.
    • Document the tool’s development and methodology.
  • Month 8: Dissertation Writing and Presentation
    • Write a comprehensive dissertation on the development and evaluation of the tool.
    • Present the findings of the project to SBM Offshore and relevant industry stakeholders.
