Overview
Shibaura Institute of Technology (SIT) has firmly maintained “learning through practice” as the philosophy in education of engineers ever since Tokyo Higher School of Industry and Commerce, the predecessor to SIT, was established in 1927. In response to the recent progress in the globalization of the economy, SIT is providing an up-to-date framework for “learning through practice” including intensive English Language programs, Project Based Learning programs under multicultural environment, along with many Hands-on subjects that has been preserved through SIT’s 88 years of history.
Details
In general, participants choose the designated research project offered bythe SIT professor. If the participants don't meet the requirements of these projects, they can also look for the laboratory based on their interest. Participants may be accepted by professors based on their knowledge, experience and the lab capacity of SIT professors. In this case, the research topic and content will be decided based on discussion between the host professor at SIT and the participant. Participants can pursue their research topics in a Japanese-style laboratory and a culturally diverse, vibrant academic/research environment.
For undergraduate-level students, the program allows them to gain hands-on experience and practice research skills at an early stage of higher education. For graduate-level students, the program can be used as a part of the thesis work

How to apply?
- First of all, decide on your entry period (when you want to start and how long you want to stay) and check the application submission period.
- Then, please apply for the program during the application submission period.
- To apply for the program, you must be nominated by your home university.
- (Your university coordinator will also be asked to upload the nomination form to the online application system.)

Description of Ideal Candidate
The applicant must:
- Be a 3rd year Bachelor*or higher with basic/good knowledge to conduct research work independently.
- Complete this program at SIT and return to his/her home university before graduating.
- Have a good command of English* (CEFR B2 equivalent or higher).
- Be physically and mentally healthy. (Health checkup and health certificate are mandatory for all students.)
- Program period is less than 90 days
- Program period is more than 90 days
- Comply with Japanese export control regulations.
* If the applicant is a third-year university student at the start of the program, he/she is eligible to apply for our program.
* CEFR B2 is equivalent to IELTS 5.5-6.5, TOEFL iBT 72-94, (These scores may change from time to time)
* Native English speakers and English-based degree students do not need to submit an English proficiency score.
* If the applicant hasn't taken the English proficiency test, his/her home university may provide a letter certifying the student's English proficiency.
