Overview

The Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) is pleased to introduce its Internship Programme and provide current and recent students with the opportunity to intern with the SHAPE international community at Mons, Belgium. The SHAPE Internship Program (SIP) is part of the Supreme Allied Commander Europe's (SACEUR) larger campaign to elevate and improve SHAPE's and Allied Command Operations' (ACO) visibility.

Details

Through its internship programme, SHAPE is aiming at introducing young candidates from different backgrounds into all areas of the organisation. The SHAPE Internship Program (SIP) will consist of no more than 20 interns per year. The internship programme shall be beneficial to both the interns and SHAPE. The interns must be able to gain an understanding of an international organisation, while substantiating their CV and the Divisions/Offices of SHAPE shall dispose of additional workforce over a set period of time.
The SHAPE Internship Programme will be limited to 30 interns per year and will be available for the following periods:
  • 6 months internship as part of, or complementary to a university degree programme (programme starts in September and January).
  • 6 months internship for, in principle, recent Bachelor graduated students who are interested in a specific project that can be of support for a Master graduation programme.
  • 6-12 months internship programme for, in principle, recent Master or PhD graduated students (graduated less than 6 months ago) who are looking for work experience in an international organisation as a first step to an international career.

We are especially interested in those with the following skillsets:

Economics, Finance, Human Resources, Information Technology, Web / Graphic Design, Library Sciences, Translation, Aeronautics, Engineering, Media / Journalism, Russian / Ukrainian and Arabic language speakers

OBJECTIVES

The SHAPE Internship Programme has four main objectives:

  • To offer interns the opportunity to learn from the SHAPE community and gain a thorough understanding of the organisation and NATO in general.
  • To contribute to creating a more diverse workforce through encouraging Divisions/Offices to take on interns of different nationalities, origins and backgrounds with a view, in the mid to long-term, to providing SHAPE with a younger and more diverse pool of potential future job applicants.
  • To provide SHAPE with access to the contemporary academic, theoretical and technical knowledge that the interns can apply through practical work assignments.
  • To expand understanding of NATO in Alliance countries by having interns return to their countries and/or universities after completing the internship and share their experience, as well as to help NATO branding by being an Ambassador of SHAPE.

PROCEDURES

Internship applications, whether coming through the National Military Representatives or directly from candidates, must be submitted using the enclosed application form. The candidate's CV must be attached to the application form. In addition, all interns have to submit a one-page essay giving details on their motivation for an internship at SHAPE and on their expectations during the internship.

Following an initial screening by SHAPE Civilian Human Resources Management Branch (CHRM), applications are sent to Divisions/Offices, which are responsible for the selection of interns. In addition to verifying that applicants meet the required criteria for the programme, the initial screening ensures a fair distribution of the internships among all member states that provide interns. Final selection is made in May - June (for the internship starting in either January or September of the following year). Once a candidate has been selected, the start date of the internship is determined taking into account divisional needs, the availability of the selected candidate, and the security requirements.
