About the role
Uber Engineering is growing quickly as we look to take on exciting opportunities at scale around the world.
Internally, we build and run thousands of RPC services defined in Thrift and Protobuf that communicate with one another via HTTP, TChannel, & gRPC. Our team owns the adapter layer that abstracts the details of RPC away from the service teams and the resilience components on the server-side (e.g. timeouts, load shedding) and on the client-side (e.g. circuit breaker, retries).
We want to optimize various aspects of RPC related to latency, throughput, and reliability. We have internal guidelines and tuning mechanisms. The goal here would be to innovate on the current recommendations and research and demonstrate how we can build more performant and reliable distributed systems. Depending on the results we may choose to open source the approach and publish the research in blog posts and academic papers.
What You'll Do
- Drive exciting, ambitious, previously unsolved projects from end to end.
- Thrive in ambiguous product requirements.

- Make data-driven decisions with exceptional execution.
- Collaborate closely with product managers and data scientists.
- Be motivated to own projects and push them forward with independence.
- Most importantly, have a passion for making Uber better for our customers.
- Publish your work at top computer science conferences.
