Interview Tips in Canada

If you are about to land on your first interview, make sure to take note about the non-verbal culture of Canadians in the previous sections of this guide. Be mindful of the body language and language skills tips mentioned, because it may become very useful during your first meeting with an employer. Below are tips specifically for your upcoming interview:

Tip 1: Before your interview, try to research as much about the company you will be applying for. You should be able to bring with you some basic and general knowledge about the firm for it will surely be part of the questions. Make sure to review the position you are applying for as well, this will help you answer questions that are relevant to your job description.

Tip 2: Always be punctual and arrive minutes early before your interview. Although it is very unfortunate to be late for your interview, should you expect to arrive late, always call ahead of time, and inform the company immediately. Canadians are very direct when it comes to business, if you are about to call them due to a delay, tell them right away and later discuss the cause of your late arrival.

Tip 3: Be straightforward in answering questions. Don’t beat around the bush or try to appeal to your employer’s emotions by saying things that may not direct to the answers your employers are looking for. State your point right away and show them your motivation to get the job by answering questions based on the skills that you possess. Demonstrate your expertise by giving examples of previous accomplishments, however, avoid telling it in a manner that would sound like you’re bragging.

Tip 4: Don’t forget to wear decent and appropriate corporate clothing. Men are expected to be in dark-colored suits over collared button-up shirts and women may prefer to wear a dark-colored dress with appropriate length or a pantsuit.

If you’re the employee they are looking for, the HR personnel shall reach you out the soonest possible time they are able. Although it is not an offense to follow up on the HR officer, make sure you just politely shoot an email if you think you should be hearing from them already.
