Stay Safe in Canada
Canada is generally a safe country, and it even landed the 6th spot in CN Traveler’s The 10 Safest Countries in the World article. However safe though, one can always benefit from knowing how to take care in a foreign land. Here are some tips in staying safe that may come in handy while you are residing in Canada:
- Always check the weather condition of the region in Canada you are visiting. Due to the massive size of the country, it has different weather conditions per region. Especially during winter, always wear clothing that will keep you warm, because it may be too cold in other places in the country.
- Canada has one of the most stunning national parks in the world. However, take note that you should always listen to your tour guide when going around the parks. Canada’s wildlife is also abundant, so you may want to stay away from places where the wolves and the bears might be lurking around.
- Do not walk alone at night, especially in unlit areas. Although crime rates in the country are relatively lower than in most countries, common accidents may also be caused by animals that are active during night time.
- Two-thirds of the polar bear population in the world lives in Canada, so when visiting areas where they are said to be staying, please don’t dare come close to these animals for they may be provoked to attack. Always be mindful of signs where people are not advised to stay, and don’t separate from tour groups.
- When driving, most especially at night, be mindful of animals that cross highways and roads. Hitting an animal on the road is becoming a usual accident in Canada, which leads them to creating the Wildlife Collision Prevention Program. This program gives hints to avoid striking an animal on the road.
- When skiing, listen to protocols and always be mindful of signs that inform people about the safe locations for skiing.
- In Vancouver, avoid visiting the Downtown Eastside. This area is notorious for homelessness and drug problems.
- In Toronto, it is best to avoid staying in Sherbourne and Parliament Streets after dark. Petty crimes were recorded to have been happening here most especially at night.
