Stay Safe in Norway
Norway is generally a very safe country to be in. Their most recent safety index went up as high as 66.38. The country also ranked 3rd in the safest countries in the world. However, it is advisable that foreigners should remain vigilant and cautious when travelling to a different country. Check the safety tips below that you may carry with you during your visit:
- Pickpockets are becoming more prevalent, especially during the summer. Always keep an eye on your belongings and avoid bringing excessive cash and unnecessary jewelry.
- Bicycle theft is one of the common crimes in the country. If you are travelling with a bike, never leave your bike unattended without a lock. Keep secured bike wire with you when riding your bicycle to places where you have to park in bike racks.
- Using or trafficking illegal drugs in Norway has severe punishments. Long jail sentences and heavy fines are expected for offenders.
- Women will have very few worries traveling alone in Norway. However, it advised for both males and females to avoid walking alone at night, or going into dark places where the presence of people is not present. Always notify someone if you will be doing outdoor activities, or if you are travelling alone, you may inform your hotel receptionist.
- Nature-related accidents are very common among tourists. Always listen to tour guides, and never go to places where ‘No Entry’ signages are visible. When visiting beaches or any body of water, always bring someone with you who knows how to swim. Better yet, do not get into waters that are unfamiliar and isolated.
- A few wild animals can be seen in Norway. Do not in any way pet or approach stray animals as it may be provoked to attack you.
- When going hiking or skiing, always check the weather for forecasts. Be prepared with sudden changes in temperatures and always bring someone with your during the mentioned activities.
