Stay Safe in Qatar
Qatar is one of the safest destinations in the Middle East. Its crime index is very low at only 6.63, and crimes like theft, assault, and other petty incidents are considered rare. The country is relatively safer than most of its neighboring countries, and expats can definitely feel security even at night.
However, since you are in a foreign land, it is still recommended that you take necessary precautions when outdoors. Take with you the following safety tips during your journey:
- Take note that 999 is the hotline for any forms of emergencies, always bring your phone with you to be able to access emergency response from local providers.
- Western women were reported to be more prone to harassment that are not life-threatening, such as men staring and whispering as you pass by.
- Sand storms are very common in the country, always bring protective gear from such incidents.
- More often than expected, temperatures in the country tend to rise above the normal temperature you may be used to. Always bring a tumbler of water with you to keep you hydrated, and a sunscreen with SPF 50 protection to prevent sunburns.
- Prostitution is strictly illegal in the country, avoid any illegal offers by all means.
- Never criticize a Muslim, the Islam religion, or Prophet Mohammed, as this is punishable and is treated as a crime in the country. Always show respect to the locals’ traditions and rituals.
- The entire society in Qatar shuts down during Friday mornings and Eid holidays, always do your errands right before such dates and stock-up on food.
- Never stare, compliment, or show interest in a Qatari female, it is considered offensive. Some Qatari females may attract attention most especially when they wear their traditional black clothing, however, try not to stare at them or look with curiosity because it makes them feel uncomfortable. On rare circumstances, staring at a married local might cause her husband to call you out.
- For females, it is advisable that you do not expose your shoulders, more than half of your arms, or your knees, this may be publicly criticized or ridiculed by local females.
- The Qatar government is very lenient in terms of traffic laws. Always stay alert when crossing streets and when driving.
