Overview

The Fulbright Slovak Student Program offers grants to Slovak students who have completed their Master’s degree, and are interested in Master’s programs or Ph.D. research at accredited universities all over the United States. A study and/or research stay in the U.S. may take 6 to 9 months. Applications are accepted in all fields of study, except for clinical medicine (direct patient contact) and LL.M and MBA programs.

How to apply

Candidates must submit an online application. At this point, there is no need to send any documents to the Commission. Selected candidates will be notified by the Commission and requested to provide original copies of the documents submitted online together with official English translations.

Application must include: CV, Study/Research Objectives, Personal Statement, 3 Reference Letters, List of at least 3 institutions at which the candidate wishes to conduct research, study or seek a Master’s degree, and TOEFL/IELTS score report.

Timeline

The application period is open from March to June. Candidates should bear in mind that they need to submit their application approximately one year prior to the start of their grant period. Deadline for submission of application for academic year 2025/2026 is June 30, 2024. Incomplete applications or applications received after the deadline will not be considered.

Description of Ideal Candidate

Eligibility criteria

  • Slovak citizenship
  • Master’s degree (Slovak equivalent “Mgr.” or “Ing.”)
  • Excellent academic record or other qualifying educational or related professional experience
  • Proficiency in English confirmed by TOEFL score (95 points) or IETLS score (7,5 points)
  • Confirmation of sufficient funds when applying for a Master’s degree to cover tuition costs exceeding $19,000 as well as maintenance costs funded by the Commission

Factors affecting selection

  • Preference given to candidates without extensive previous experience in the United States
  • Scholarly, artistic, social and community commitment or work (also on a volunteer basis)
  • Adaptability and personal suitability of candidates who can contribute to a full and fair picture of the culture and civilization of their own country
  • A willingness to return to Slovakia, build on skills gained in the United States and share knowledge across communities at home

Cost/funding for participants

Grant Benefits

  • Living expenses: The living expenses are calculated based on the living costs estimated for the specific location of the host institution
  • Tuition and fees: covered up to $19,000 (individual Fulbright recipients might be offered a tuition waiver from U.S. universities that might reduce the overall cost of study)
  • Roundtrip ticket: international economy class airfare via the most direct route from home of the grantee to the authorized destination in the U.S.
  • Visa sponsorship: J-1 visa sponsorship for grantee and J-2 visa sponsorship for dependents
  • Allowances: Book and supply allowance
  • ASPE: Accident and Sickness Program for Exchanges covering basic healthcare (supplemental private insurance highly recommended)
  • Administrative support: The Commission helps grantees prepare for their stay in the U.S. while the Institute of International Education (IIE) provides on-going support over the course of the grant
